SHOULD I DROP MY GRADUATION SUBJECT TO SELECT HUMANITIES SUBJECT?

- The level of optional subject papers’ difficulty in UPSC exam is little higher than the bachelors’ degree (i.e. 3 years courses) and little lower than the
masters’ degree (i.e. 2 years courses).
- So, If you take up a subject which you have not studied in the graduation then it is going to take at anything between 4-8 months’ preparation to gain
mastery for it (Depending on how many hours you are investing on it.)
- The notion that Humanities subjects like sociology public administration political science have overlapping with the general studies = so we should take
them= It should not be your primary consideration. Because hardly in one or two question of GS Mains papers, you will get to you have the chance to show
your your optional mastery. Otherwise traditionally a lot of these optional subject matter deals with thinkers, theory, philosophical concepts not related to
general studies. If you dislike reading such things then it will be difficult for you to sit with the books for a long time.Then people simply rely on the
readymade coaching notes for optional subject, while they help finishing syllabus fast’ but not always guarantee best marks in the answer When the
evaluators are looking for more death then superficial bullet points .
- A known devil is better than an unknown Angel. So you have to weigh how Comfortable you are with your maths/medical
science/engineering/commerce/B.Sc graduation subject. You may be able to finish it much faster compared to selecting an unknown optional subject
Which you have not studied in graduation.
- On YouTube people will make all type of clickbait strategies like “Take off Anthropology subject it has very short syllabus and you can finish it within the
three months By reading just 3 books”. But Every subject has senior players who have studied more number of academic books beyond ‘prescribed
minimum list’, and prepared more better quality of points and notes, to get more marks in mains. So, this whole craze of ‘short syllabus’ also Need to be
taken with A Pinch of salt.
- Only if you are very weak in your college graduation subject, and want to explore some other optional subject then you may do so.
- At the end of the day there are toppers from every optional subject. Once I met a topper with SINDHI Optional subject (Whom every coaching wala advised
that he should take traditional subject like Political science sociology or public administration).
- If 200 candidates are appearing with law optional subject and only 20 are getting interview call then the remaining 180 are always going to bad mouth that
law is a bad subject. But, IS UPSC a rice distribution scheme of Government ke Everyone standing in the queue must get the 5 kilogram rice?
- To conclude
- 1) First priority select your graduation subject if you are comfortable with it
- 2) If you are not comfortable with your graduation subject for the graduation subject is not offered as a optional subject (e.g. Computer engineering,
pharmacy etc.) Then explore other subjects
- 3) Among those other subjects select the one in which you have some interest So that you can sit with it for a longer period of time, and some level of
guidence/strategy/booklist is available.
WHICH ONE TO PICK FROM PUBAD/POLSCI/SOCIO

● In terms of structure, length and relevance in GS Mains papers = they are nearer to each other. And good number of courses are running in unacademy plus
for each of these three subjects
● So pick either one based on your personal taste / interest. Some failed candidates may say do not select public administration because papers are very
tough. Some failed candidates will say do not take sociology because a less number of candidates are given interview calls than polSci. Basically those who
do not get the interview call will bad mouth their optional subjects.
● But at the end of the day there are a good number of toppers from all three subjects. so it all depends on your personal interest because if you do not have
personal interest then you will feel very very bored to sit through the long hours of reading thick academic books of such subjects.

- When I have to teach economy for general studies, I've a photoframe in my mind about 'upto how big picture should i create'? I confine that photoframe's

- 1) Student is not listening properly to what teacher has said in the lecture/handout. Student may be treating this whole course as casual glancing

- 2) Student may have mistaken this course has some type of College course. This is a competitive exam course. We are not here for intellectual
upliftment. We are here only to pass the cut off race. Student may satisfy his/her curiosity by doing the Google search but I do not think it is the

UNABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE TOPIC WHICH IS ALREADY SIMPLIFIED IN SUFFICIENT MANNER

- The PowerPoint and hand out which I am teaching you at present= it has evolved over last 10 years just like Win10 Operating system. I taught them in
multiple batches offline and online batches. IF students raised doubts, then it I simplified it further to prevent similar doubts in future batches.
- Consequently, at present the content is enough simplified and exam oriented enough that any Graduate Level Candidate aspiring to be IAS/IPS, should be
able to understand it even IF he has average level of intelligence. And I make that claim without arrogance or condescending attitude.
- So if student is unable to understand it, then one or more of following reasons to explain it:
a. Student is not attending the video of lecture. He is simply reading powerpoint/handout by himself. And therefore having all type of doubts which
are already explained in the lecture audio video itself.
b. Student is not listening to what I am teaching or not reading the handout properly. Student is just superficially glancing over the content like it
is a WhatsApp message or tv-serial. But the good thing is Student can re-watch the recorded video multiple times. OR
c. Student does not have the patience for the full picture to evolve. e.g. I am teaching about the money supply and monetary policy for India and his
brain is wandering into how it will affect the currency exchange rate. we'll learn that pillar 3. presently we are in pillar 1 so have the patience till
we reach pillar3. OR
d. Student is not interested in listening to what I am teaching. He is interested in overthinking/PHD-ing/hairsplittery outside the "photo frame".

power to comprehend the most basic level of things like how event "A" will lead to "B". And then those 15 years of weakness in school-collage= a
coaching faculty can't rectify in 4 months of coaching. The sad reality of life = this is a competitive exam coaching class. IF 5000 other students
have understood it without complaint, then the coaching faculty will move to the next topic. He cannot sit and give personal tuition to every weak
student who is unable to understand the most basic thing. There is a limitation on how much spoon feeding can be done. I don't blame the student.
I blame his school-college teachers for that.
