ACTIVITY # 3 : CARTESIAN DIVER

Materials:
Eye Dropper
1.5L Bottle
Water

Procedure:
1. Fill the plastic soda bottle to the VERY top with water.
2. Fill the glass eyedropper about 1/4 full with water. You may need to experiment with the amount of
water in the eye dropper, as it should be just enough to make it so the eye dropper is barely floating.
3. Place the eye dropper into the soda bottle. The eye dropper should float and the water in the bottle
should be overflowing. Seal the bottle with the cap.
4. Gently squeeze the sides of the bottle and notice how the eye dropper (called a diver) sinks.
Release your squeeze and it floats back up to the top.
5. Squeeze again and observe the water level in the eyedropper (it goes up).

PLEASE PREPARE A 10-30 SECOND VIDEO OF YOU SHOWING YOUR CARTESIAN DIVER

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. How does it work? __When you put a lot of water inside the 1.5L bottle and when you use the
medicine dropper and fill it with a 1/4 of water and drop it inside the bottle it causes the dropper to
sink in the bottom of the bottle .

2. What causes the diver to sink and float? _Gas molecules can be squeezed more easily than liquid
molecules. The more water in the diver’s system , the less buoyant it becomes, and the diver sinks.

3. What theory is at work? __Principle of Buoyancy (Archimedes’ Principle) And Gas Law

4. Comment on the dangers when diving at great depths and how to avoid dangerous problems.
___Deep water blackout, also known as depth blackout, is a loss of consciousness at depths 50 m
caused by nitrogen narcosis, a neurological impairment with anaesthetic effects induced by a high
partial pressure of nitrogen dissolved in nerve tissue. To avoid this dangerous problems you must
learn or train before you dive into the depths.
