40
Henry arrives to school early in the morning and goes to
the school library. It’s Friday, so they have a free study
session before school starts. Violet is there.

VIOLET: Good morning, Henry! You arrived early today.

HENRY: Yes. I walked to school.

VIOLET: Why did you walk to school? Did the bus not work
today?

HENRY: I walked because I've got a big problem.

VIOLET: What happened?

HENRY: I didn't do my project. Yesterday afternoon was a

disaster!

VIOLET: What happened?

HENRY: After school I visited the National History Museum

with my dad to look for information for the project. Dad says

41
I'm always asking my grandma to help me with my school
work and I needed to start looking for information myself. I
miss having mum here with us, she's much more
understanding! The main exhibition closed at 3, so dad and I
didn't arrive on time. Dad was a little bit upset because I
waited until the very last day.

VIOLET: Oops! What did you do then?

HENRY: I decided to go to my local library. Dad had to pick

Violet up from her ballet lessons, so he dropped me at the
bus stop. I took the wrong bus and I ended up on the other
side of town. I didn't have my mobile phone, so I phoned my
dad from a telephone box. He and Hannah picked me up.
Dad said the library was closed already, so I could do my
project at home after dinner. We went to a nice pub for
dinner.

VIOLET: That's nice!

HENRY: It was nice, but, guess what? Hannah ordered a

burger, it looked delicious! But it probably contained some
kind of nuts and she got very sick.

VIOLET: Oh, no! What did you do?

HENRY: We hurried to the hospital and waited there for two

hours. She's fine now, but we freaked out!

VIOLET: I'm sure Ms. Nelson will understand. Did your dad
give you a note for her?

HENRY: No, he didn't. He said I should have done my project

earlier and not wait until the very last minute. He didn't want
me to use my horrible, terrible, no good day as an excuse.

42
VIOLET: Did you talk to your grandma?

HENRY: Yes, I did. I talked to her last night. Dad wasn't very
happy about it, but he said we had had enough incidents for
the day. Grandma gave me lots of information, I have to
write it down now because my computer didn't work last
night. She talked about how people didn't have television, so
they talked and played traditional games. She also told me
that there weren't any telephones, so people sent telegrams
and letters which travelled for days because there weren't
fast cars or planes. She told me she didn't visit any place out
of Sandown or the Isle of Wight until she was 25. At school,
they didn't have computers or interactive white boards, they
listened to the teacher and copied information. Pens didn't
exist, they used ink to write.

VIOLET: I see you learned a lot of things from your grandma.

I can help you write them down and your day will not be so
horrible or terrible today.

HENRY: Thanks, Violet! My grandma also sent me lots of

photos. Let's get this project finished!

Techno
Technology and inventors

In this lesson, you’re going to read a text about

technology in the past and present.

1. Let's start with a game: Grammar race. Write a

sentence using the given clues.

2. Listen and read the following text.

Technology in the past and present

Not so long ago, children played with their walkie-talkies
and listened to music on their Walkman . Music was
recorded on audio cassettes and played on cassette
players. People used cable telephones and even telephone
boxes . These were some of the technological devices we
used some years ago.

69
Nowadays, things are different. Technology is more present
in our everyday lives.

Internet. Sir Tim

Berners-Lee is a
computer scientist from
London, UK. In 1989, he
invented the World Wide
Web, a system for
people to share
information worldwide.
In 1991 he released the
first version of the web.
He worked using other
people's ideas, so we
can't say he invented the
Internet, but we can say
he invented the www.
He's considered as one
of the most important
inventors of the 20th
century. Thanks to the
Internet, we have access
70
to loads of information
and we can
communicate with
anyone from anywhere
in the world.

Smartphones.
Alexander Graham Bell
invented the telephone.
In 1876, he used a
telephone for the first
time. Years later, the
first mobile phones
were invented and, in
1993, they released the
first smartphone. Today,
smartphones are much
more than just a mobile
phone. You can call and
take photos, but you can
also look for
information, use GPS,
listen to music and write
e-mails. Some
smartphones can also
talk to you, answer
questions, open doors
and turn lights on and
off when you're not at
home. Smartphones are
evolving very fast.

Robots. The first robots

71
were invented between
1700 and 1900. They
were very simple. In
1913, the first robot
machine was installed in
a car factory. In 1933,
they invented the first
robot toy in Japan. It was
15 cm tall and could
walk. In the year 2000,
the humanoid robot
ASIMO was launched.
Humanoid robots are
used in shops and even
schools in Japan. In the
land of the rising sun,
there's a hotel where
customers are only
assisted by robots.
Nowadays, robots are
part of our everyday
lives, such as robotic
vacuum cleaners which
clean the house on their
own.

Mini pr
Mini project:
"______'s day"

In this lesson, you’re going to imagine you spied on a

famous person for a day. Then, you're going to make
a simple comic strip describing what he/she did.

Objectives:
Being able to design a comic that describes what someone
did.
Being able to combine what the character did (simple past)
and the dialogues (simple present or present continuous).
Developing digital competence (if done online).

Process:
1. Choose a famous character (athlete, scientist, actor,
singer, etc.) or find information about the character that
has been given to you, and imagine you're spying on him.
Then, design a comic retelling what he did, whom he
visited, what time he arrived home, what he/she cooked ...

2. Work on your story plot.

3. Once you know what your famous person did

78
that day, you have to design a comic either drawing
it or using the online applications given.
4. Once the comic is designed, complete it with the
text.
