Filipino Song Composers

Posted on November 3, 2018 by Almighty Tabuena

Introduction
Philippine contemporary music is categorized into three parts in accordance with the
curriculum guide given by the Department of Education; (1) traditional music, (2) new music,
and (3) song composers. In this lesson, we will discuss the third topic: song composers.

When we are talking about [song] composers, a composer is a musician who is an author of
music in any form, including vocal, instrumental, electronic [music], and music that
combines multiple forms. On the other hand, a composer could be a lyricist and one who
creates the melody out of the lyrics made.

Objectives:

 Distinguish certain musical pieces and styles.

 Describe distinctive characteristics of traditional and contemporary song composers.

Constancio De Guzman is considered the “Dean of Filipino Movie Composers and Musical
Directors,” because much of his music was broadcasted on many TV and radio programs; an
example of those is the Maala-ala Mo Kaya segment by one of the networks in television.

Some of his compositions include Ang Tangi Kong Pag-ibig, Sa Lumang Simbahan, and
Bayan Ko. Observe and analyze the sample music sheet below composed by Constancio De
Guzman, entitled Bayan Ko:

Two notable awards were given to Celerio, as National Artist in Music, as well as in Literature,
for he endured and contributed in both art forms: music and literature.

Levi Celerio and Lucio San Pedro had become partners for some of their music compositions
– Celerio as the lyricist and San Pedro for the melody of the music composition; and some
of the examples are the songs “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan,” and “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit.”

Moreover, he made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for being the only person to
make music with a leaf.

1. Song composers became popular with their musical compositions used as musical
background or theme songs in movies and films (Sunico, 2015).
2. The 20th-century Filipino song composers/lyricists include Levi Celerio, Constancio
de Guzman, Mike Velarde Jr., and George Canseco, as they had produced a
