Introduction

Child psychology is the study of subconscious and conscious childhood development.

Child psychologists observe how a child interacts with their parents, themselves, and the world,
to understand their mental development. Jean Piaget is regarded as the founder of modern child
psychology. His work, from the 1920s onwards, supported the idea that children and adults think
differently from each other. Child psychology is important because it can help us better
understand how kids tick as well as how best to support them to become well-rounded
individuals. It is therefore useful in assisting both parents and teachers to better understand and
help children in their care.
Child Psychology, as is evident by nomenclature, is the psychology of a child. A
child is a human being of a definite age. Psychologists maintain that childhood is continuous till
the age of twelve. In order to distinguish the first six years of a child’s life from the second stage
of development between six and twelve, the term infancy is applied to the former. Development
begins when the child is still in his mother’s womb, and therefore, the study of the prenatal stage
also becomes important.
Modern psychologists, therefore, believe that child psychology should comprehend
the child’s development almost from the moment of conception to its attaining the age of
eighteen. Hence, when we say that child psychology is the study of a child, we hint at the study
of the human being from the moment of conception to the time when he enters the adolescent
period. The one most important fact that emerges from the study of this development is that it is
during this period that the foundations of later adult life are laid. It is the age of growth, the
period for all kinds of development and growth.
It is essential to define psychology in order to arrive at a precise definition of child
psychology because the latter is a branch of the former. Looked at from this standpoint, it too
becomes a positive science that studies man in his particular environment with the one limitation
that it studies man or human being below the age of eighteen. Child psychology took on its
mantle of an individual and distinct branch of psychology in the 19th century when psychologists
gradually realized the importance of the study of child behavior in isolation from adult behavior.
Consequently, it became important to define it with greater precision.
Learning disabilities are disorders that affect the ability to understand or use spoken or
written language, do mathematical calculations, coordinate movements, or direct attention.

1
Although learning disabilities occur in very young children, the disorders are usually not
recognized until the child reaches school age. A learning disability is a neurological disorder. In
simple terms, a learning disability results from a difference in the way a person's brain is
"wired." Children with learning disabilities are as smart as or smarter than their peers. But they
may have difficulty reading, writing, spelling, and reasoning, recalling, and/or organizing
information if left to figure things out by themselves or if taught in conventional ways. A
learning disability can't be cured or fixed; it is a lifelong issue.
With the right support and intervention, however, children with learning disabilities
can succeed in school and go on to successful, often distinguished careers later in life. Parents
can help children with learning disabilities achieve such success by encouraging their strengths,
knowing their weaknesses, understanding the educational system, working with professionals,
and learning about strategies for dealing with specific difficulties.

There are a great diversity of childhood disorder forms and causes. Some of these
disorders are primarily disorders of the brain, while others are more behavioural in nature. Brain-
based disorders are caused by neurochemical problems or structural abnormalities of the brain.
They can be innate (i.e., appearing at or shortly after birth); or they may result from a physical
stress such as illness or injury, or an emotional stress, such as trauma or loss. Behavioural

2
problems, on the other hand, are outward signs of difficulty displayed at home, at school, or
among friends in an otherwise physically healthy child. Like brain-based problems, behavioural
problems may also result from physical or emotional stress.

Despite how common they may be, childhood disorders are not part of the normal
developmental process that children are expected to go through. The diagnostic criteria for
childhood mental disorders requires that children's behaviour and/or development deviates from
normal age-appropriate behaviour and/or development.

Common childhood mental illnesses and developmental disorders include Depression,

Bipolar Disorder and Anxiety Disorders, Autism and similar Pervasive Developmental
Disorders, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Adjustment
Disorders, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Conduct Disorder.

Objective of the Case Study

The main objective of the study is to identify the learning disorder of the child. To learn
how to overcome the problems faced by the child. Find out the right intervention to support the
child from the disabilities.

Case Study Overview

Thanya L.S is a nine year old girl. Now she is studying in 4 th grade in Maharishi Vidya
Mandir Senior secondary school, Mangadu, Chennai. She is a younger child in her family. She is
having an elder brother, he is in 7th grade in the same school. Her father’s name is Mr.
K.Lingeswaran, Her mother’s name is Ms.L.Santhanalakshmi. She is very bold in nature.

Present Complaints
Thanya L.S is a slow learner in their academic part. So her class teacher recommended the
remedial class. She is attending remedial classes past one year. Now Ms.Vani is taking the
remedial class since July. She is not able to read simple two or three-letter words e.g. (he, she,

problems.

Now she can read simple sentences easily and she can pronounce the word easily. She can
recollect past class learning also. Now she can pronounce the words easily. She is very active in
the class.

Plan of Intervention
While starting a class mam asked to write day and date in their notebooks for their
recalling activity. While teaching English articles, singular and plural nouns mam repeats the
same rules for a week.
Mam asked to prepare a chart for rules and asked the child to stick it in the wall for their
recall purpose. Mam always starts a class with a game like Jumble words, Nouns, Synonyms and
Antonyms, Simple two-digit multiplication sums successor and predecessor for single and two-
digit numbers.

Conclusion
In this case study about Thanya L.S is a nine-year-old girl, she is a slow learner in their
academic part. At the age of eight years, she cannot able to read a single three-letter word, now
she can read a sentence easily.
She will be able to understand the meaning of the simple words also, she can form a
simple sentence easily now. In the math subject now she can do two-digit multiplication and
division easily. Now, she can understand the successor and predecessor for four-digit numbers
also.

Suggestion
The child must have a reading practice daily. They have to prepare a rules chart for the
grammar part and have to stick it in their study room for recall purposes. They have to practice

4
some worksheets regularly. The chart presentation must be colourful and attractive manner. The
child is eagerly participating in games types’ activity so the teacher must focus on activity and
concept based learning.
