WORKSHEET 6: Variables
Name Dana Charlotte Palmario Section Archimedes Score

Teacher Miss Ginarose Habal Date 10/16/21

OBJECTIVES: (1) Identify the variables in a given experimental set-up.

(2) Develop an experimental set- up specifying variables.

SCIENCE CONCEPT/S: Variables: Scientists use an experiment to search for cause and effect relationships in
nature. In other words, they design an experiment so that changes to one item cause something else to vary in a
predictable way. A variable is any factor, trait, or condition that can exist in differing amounts or types. An experiment
usually has three kinds of variables: independent, dependent, and controlled.

Independent Variable: this variable is changed by the researcher and observations are made to see if the change of
the independent variable has an impact on the dependent variables. Only ONE independent variable should change
in an experiment
Dependent Variables: these variables change as a result of the independent variable. The scientist focuses the
observations on the dependent variable to see how it responds to the change made to the independent variable.
The new value of the dependent variable is caused by and depends on the value of the independent variable. This is
where your DATA comes from.
Controlled Variables: these are Variables in the experiment that you keep the same (YOU MAKE SURE THEY DON’T
CHANGE)
Task 1 : For each of the following case studies name the:-
(A) Independent variable (B) Dependent variable (C) Control variable

Case study 1 – Measuring gravity

The aim of this experiment is to find out how fast objects of different masses take to fall from
height. To conduct this experiment, we used a number of different sized steel ball-bearings,
which had different masses. Each ball-bearing was weighed on scales, before being dropped from
a marker exactly 2 m from the floor. The time the ball baring took to drop was timed on a
stopwatch and repeated 3 times for each ball- baring to gain an average time.

(A) Independent Variable: Different sized steel ball-bearings, with different masses.
(B) Dependent Variable: How fast these objects take to fall from height.
(C) Controlled Variable/s: drop height, scale and stopwatch used (similar time and weight unit),
material of the ball-bearings

Case study 2 – The color of summer

The aim of this experiment is to find out if the color of water a flower is grown in effects the color
of the flower. Five white roses of a similar size and shape were selected and placed into 5
separate beakers each containing 250 ml of water. Each of the 5 beakers had a few drops of one
of five different colors of food dye added to it (red, green, blue, yellow and brown). The beakers
were then placed on a windowsill and the color of the flowers monitored twice a day for two
weeks.

(A) Independent Variable: Color of the water

(B) Dependent Variable: Color of the flower
(C) Controlled Variable/s: size and shape of the flower, amount of water, number of drops of
food dye, location, kind of flower, number of days to be observed

Case study 3 – how far does the spring stretch?

The aim of this experiment is to find how far different masses stretch a spring. A spring was hung
from a clamp stand, and its length end to end measured. A 10g mass was then added and the
length of the spring measured and recorded. This was repeated adding 10g between 0g and
100g.

(A) Independent Variable: Different masses

(B) Dependent Variable: Length of the stretched spring
(C) Controlled Variable/s: spring used, similar item added with the weight of 10g, similar height
of the clamp stand

Task 2: Over to you!

Read the following passage and plan an experiment, but make sure you make you clearly state
your independent, dependent and control variables.
You want to plan an investigation to find out what conditions woodlice prefer light/dark,
damp/dry, and warm/cold?

Study of what conditions on habitats do woodlice prefer.

The aim of this experiment is to know what conditions woodlice need and prefer for their
habitats. I would conduct three different experiments, one that will answer whether it
should be light or dark, one that will answer whether it is damp or dry, and one that will
answer whether it is warm or cold.

Then I would list down the correct answers altogether in my journal.

But since these options are way different things, I could prepare two rocks. One that is
dry and warm and placed near a light; and one that is damp, cold, and placed nowhere
near a light. I would allow the same number of woodlice to inhabit each rock, I am to see
which rock would be a perfect habitat for survival.

(A) Independent Variable: Condition of the rock

(B) Dependent Variable: Number of woodlice that survived
(C) Controlled Variable/s: kind of woodlice; number of woodlice in each rock; specific and
correct amount of light, darkness, dryness, dampness, warmth, and coldness

(Provide a separate sheet/s for your answer if necessary)
