Communication

- is the process of passing information (sender) and

understanding (receiving) the same from one person to

another throguh verbal and non verbal means.


Culture

- defined as behaviours, ways of life, arts, beliefs

and institutions of a population that are passed

down from generation to generation.

- it is a sensitivity and understanding of our

responses to people who have different

traditions, values, customs, behaviours,

standards, attitude, and norms.

and language.
- for example: think about the different ways different culture take

tea.
Cultural Iceberg

Examples of Cultural Differences:


a. In most countries shaking the head from side to


side means "No" whereas in India, shaking the head
from side to side means "Yes".
b. In England the thumb and forefinger together to
form an "O" means ok., where areas in France it
means "nothing" or "without any value"

or more people from speaking to or
understanding each other through
verbal communication.

It refers to feelings of uncertainty,
confusion, or anxiety that people may
experience when moving to a new country or
experiencing a new culture or surroundings.
This cultural adjustment is normal and is
the result of being in an unfamiliar
environment

awareness

It is where people interact with each other’s different


cultures. The ability to communicate effectively and
appropriately in intercultural situations based on an
intercultural knowledge, skills, and behaviors.

It involves two qualities:

Awareness of one's own culture

Awareness of another culture

It has the capacity of standing back from our
own point and becoming aware of not only our
own cultural values, beliefs and perceptions, but
also those of other cultures

misunderstandings and to work as one
effectively.
