JINGGOY BUENSUCESO

 Background & Training

Jinggoy Buensuceso is a sculptor and visual artist from the
Philippines. Buensuceso was born in March 1982 in Samal,
Bataan in the Philippines. In 2003, he earned a Bachelor of Fine
Arts degree with a major in Visual Communication from the
University of the Philippines in Diliman. With his collaborations
with multinational design firms, the young artist has established
himself to be quite promising. He and his wife Mutya live in
Singapore with their baby Mayumi. Metal is his preferred media,
and he is a major supporter of linear art, with his work
generating stories and bold comments about oneself, society,
and way of life through the use of lines. Buensuceso is also a
rising star in the Philippine furniture world. He is a three-time
Mugna awardee, the co-founder of Epoch, a movement of six
young international artists that inspire fresh thinking in
Philippine furniture design, and a member of Hive's worldwide design team under Kenneth Cobonpue's
mentoring. Buensuceso is a design consultant for CITEM and the Design Center of the Philippines for the
2011-2012 Manila Fame event. In the field of visual arts, the artist has vast local and international
expertise. As seen by their bold declarations and clean lines, the art and architecture of New York and
Singapore, where he spent the most time, have had a profound influence on his work. How did your
interest in metal begin? “I’ve been interested in metal since childhood. The first object I made was a
knuckleduster, for a gang in my province, when I was nine years old. They gave me 20 pesos. I didn’t
know I was making a weapon that could hurt somebody.

 Influence
Buensuceso received a degree in Visual Communications from the University of the Philippines College
of Fine Arts. His paintings are heavily influenced by his upbringing in the Bataan province, as well as his
international exposure to the art and architecture of New York and Singapore, where he spent the first
few years of his career as an artist.

Artist’s Statement
My work has a 'brutalist' feel due to my preference for industrial and natural materials. I use these
materials as a tool to express my dreams and thoughts, as well as my ongoing search for a state of flow
in my studio, despite the constant noise of hammering metal, welding, and grinding.

My main color is always black. With black, I feel the most relaxed and quiet. I believe that black provides
me with endless inspiration and positive energy, as well as allowing me to transcend to another
dimension of thinking, creating, or even resting.

Medium
Each piece I made for this show is made of black sand, metal, and print and serves as a record
and imprint of what I see and touch when I am in a state of flow.

 Works

PINATUBO
The work Pinatubo, in fact, takes its title from the volcano located on Luzn Island, near the Bataan
region. The wooden panel depicts the moment of the cataclysmic eruption in 1991, 600 years after the
volcano's last activity.

MAGMA TOPOGRAP

Magma and Topography reveal the impact of this event on the artist, who does not hide his or her
fascination, and possibly even fear, of an uncontrollable natural phenomenon.
