5 LINUS: It’s still early but we have new friends who will join us in our adventure

2 town sparkle and shine? I don’t think our town is makinang. (SAD
4 LINUS: Well, if you want to know our secret, come on and read the story of our
6 DANA: Wow, thank you, Kuya Linus! May I invite my friends from other towns,
7 too?
10 friends! Let’s listen to the Town of Makinang to find out how we can
12 LINUS: Come on children, please get your copy of the Town of Makinang. It is
13 the Grade 3 leveled reader with a girl on the cover. I’ll give you twenty
16 LINUS: Alright! Ate Dana, have you got your book? Can you tell us what you see
17 on the cover?
18 DANA: I see trash, fallen trees, and some other people. The people seem to be
19 cleaning, but the girl is sad. Kuya Linus, this town does not look
20 makinang at all!

1 LINUS: Those were great observations, Ate Dana! How about you, kids? What do
2 you see? (PAUSES FOR 3 SECS) Oh, you have also noticed that the girl is
4 DANA: (CURIOUS) Hmmm… maybe because her town is so messy and dirty?
5 LINUS: Well, we’re about to find out! To the parents and guardians who are with
6 our kids right now, we will need your guidance as we go through every
7 page of the story, okay? (PAUSE FOR 2 SECS) We know we can count on
8 you. When you hear this sound (BIZ: SFX IN FLIPPING A BOOK PAGE), it
10 DANA: For those who don’t have their readers with them, don’t worry kids. Just
11 listen carefully to the story and the instructions later so we can still do our
12 activities together. We will all learn as one. Is that fine? (PAUSE FOR 2
13 SECS) Shout yes! And we’ll start our story right away.

15 LINUS: The story of our town, the Town of Makinang, is written by Basa Pilipinas.
17 DANA: We will have short activities later so make sure you pay attention. Now,
18 let’s listen to Teacher Trina from the Town of Los Baños in the Province of
19 Laguna. She will be our storyteller for today. Kids, it’s now time for Story

2 TRINA: Hello kids! Are you on page one? (PAUSE FOR 2 SECS) Great! Let’s start.
5 TRINA: Jinky walks to the river. It is full of junk. People cannot drink from it.
8 TRINA: Jinky walks to the market. Everything has a stink! Fruits are too ripe! They
9 shrink. (BIZ: INSERT STINGER) Where do you think is Jinky going to next?
14 TRINA: Jinky walks the streets. (WORRIED) The flood has made the ground
18 JINKY: (SAD) This is not how I remember the town of Makinang. (DETERMINED)
19 I must do something!

1 TRINA: That’s the end of chapter one. What do you think will Jinky do? Do you
2 have any guesses? (PAUSE FOR 3 SECS) Oh, I guess the same! Maybe she
3 will ask for help from her friends. What else? (PAUSE) Well, if you were
4 Jinky, what would you do? I will give you time to think. (BIZ: SFX IN
5 THINKING TIME FOR 5 SECS) Let’s read on to the next page, that’s page
8 TRINA: Chapter two. Jinky goes to the town mayor. She says...
11 MAYOR: Thank you! Let us think of a plan. We need to clean the town of
12 Makinang.
18 MAYOR: Yes!

2 MAYOR: This is big work. Let us get the whole town to help.

4 DANA: That’s interesting! Jinky asked for the town mayor’s help. And, my guess
5 earlier was partly correct. She will not only get her friends’ help but also of
6 the whole town’s! Kids, did you also guess that Jinky was going to their
7 mayor for help? (PAUSE FOR 3 SECS) But wait, why did Jinky choose to go
9 LINUS: That’s a very good question, Ate Dana. Let’s first ask our friends if they
10 know who their mayor is. Kids, do you know who your town or city mayor
11 is? (PAUSE FOR 2 SECS) Really? Can you tell us your mayor’s full name?
12 (PAUSE FOR 5 SECS) Alright! For those who don’t know their mayor’s
13 name, ask your parents or your guardians real quick. Come on!
15 DANA: Now that you already know your town mayor’s name, I want to ask you
16 something, kids. Do you know what a town mayor does? (PAUSE FOR 2
17 SECS) What do you think are the mayor’s duties in his or her community?
19 LINUS: Yes, Ate Dana. A mayor is someone who was voted by most of the adults
20 in a town. His or her main duties are to lead and serve the people in his or
21 her town. One way he or she does these is by helping solve the town’s
22 problems.

1 DANA: That’s why Jinky asked for the mayor’s help! So that the mayor can lead in
3 LINUS: Yes. Ate Dana, kids, do you think they can solve Makinang’s problem? Do
5 DANA: Let’s find out Kuya Linus. But first, let’s all stand up and stretch our arms
6 out wide. Put them together. Out (PAUSE), together. Repeat. Faster. Now,
7 you’re clapping. (BIZ: SFX IN CLAPPING) Lift your right foot up. Put it
11 DANA: I know! Let’s jump! (BIZ: SFX IN FEET LANDING FROM A JUMP)
12 LINUS: Whew! That was fun! Did you follow along? I hope so because we are
15 DANA: Yes, it’s Skill Builder Time! (BIZ: SFX IN SPARKLE MAGIC)
17 LINUS: For our first Skill Builder, we will play a listening game! We will use body
19 DANA: Alright! For this game, we want you to pay close attention to the ending
20 sounds of words. What is the first ending sound that they should watch out

1 LINUS: The first ending sound is -ink (AS IN PINK). Can you say it with me? -ink.
3 DANA: -ink is spelled as (SLOWLY) I-N-K, -ink. Now, the second ending sound is
4 -ank (AS IN BANK). Once again, repeat after me, -ank. (PAUSE FOR 2
5 SECS). Come on! Open your mouth as wide as you can and say, -ank.
7 LINUS: Very good! -ank is spelled as (SLOWLY) A-N-K, -ank. The last ending
8 sound is -unk (AS IN DUNK). Say it again after me, -unk. (PAUSE FOR 2
9 SECS) It is a bit similar to the -ank ending sound. But if you will notice, you
10 only open your mouth a little when saying -unk. Say it again with your
12 DANA: Can you still follow, kids? That sound is spelled as U-N-K, -unk. Now, we
13 will teach you the movements we’ll do when we hear the ending sounds.
14 Stand up kids! Stretch your bodies once again. Come on, get up!
16 LINUS: If the word ends with -ink, we will clap our hands once. Let’s try it all
18 DANA: Very good! Clap your hands once if you hear the -ink ending sound. (BIZ:
20 LINUS: Now, if the word ends with -ank we will stomp our right foot twice. Let’s
21 practice. The word is… tank. (BIZ: SFX IN STOMPING FOOT TWICE)

1 DANA: That’s great. Again, stomp your right foot twice if you hear the -ank
3 LINUS: Lastly, when you hear a word ending in -unk, we will jump three times!
4 Okay, you got it? Let’s try. The word is… dunk. (BIZ: SFX IN FEET
6 DANA: Awesome, kids! Remember to jump if the word ends with -unk (AS IN
8 LINUS: It seems that we are all ready to play our first activity. Let’s start right
9 away. Our first word is… junk! (PAUSE FOR 2 SECS) Does the word junk
10 end in -ink, -ank, or -unk sound? (PAUSE) Let’s show our answer through
11 the movements we taught you. (PAUSE FOR 4 SECS). Again, the word is
12 junk!
13 DANA: The answer is… (BIZ: SFX IN FEET LANDING FROM A JUMP) -unk! The

7 LINUS: Great job kids! You finished our first Skill Builder activity. Let’s give

10 ank-, and -unk words in your book! Read them out loud and clap once if
11 you hear -ink, stomp your right foot twice if you hear -ank, and jump three
13 LINUS: Then, try this game with words that end in -ash like trash, -ish like fish,
14 and -ush like rush! Have fun coming up with movements to assign to each

6 TRINA Then, she starts picking up trash. Soon, many are helping.
8 TRINA: What do you think will the other villagers do? (PAUSE FOR 3 SECS) Do
9 you think they will join Jinky in picking up trash? (PAUSE FOR 3 SECS)
14 TRINA: The mayor is there. He is fishing trash. Soon, others are working.
17 TRINA: Jinky checks the plants. She removes the mud and junk.

5 TRINA: Let’s pause a little. How do you think children like you can help the town
6 of Makinang? (PAUSE FOR 2 SECS) Come on, let me hear your answers!
9 TRINA: Chapter four. (PAUSE) The children have a plan. They each write a notice
10 to put up in town.
13 TRINA: They flash the signs. Brush and wash. (BIZ: SFX IN BRUSH SCRUBBING
14 AND WATER SPLASHING) Fish out the trash. (BIZ: SFX IN RIVER WATER
17 TRINA: The children put these signs around the town. The mayor is happy and

1 TRINA: Wow, these children may be little, but they are helping the Town of
2 Makinang in a big way! How about the other people in Makinang? Will they
5 TRINA: And the people brush… (BIZ: SFX IN BRUSH SCRUBBING) and wash.
6 (BIZ: SFX IN WATER SPLASHING) They fish out the trash. (BIZ: SFX IN
10 MAGIC) (SLOWLY) It is now even better than Jinky remembers it. (PAUSE
13 LINUS: And that’s the inspiring story of The Town of Makinang. Thank you for
15 DANA: Thanks, Teacher Trina! The town really underwent a huge transformation.
16 How about you, kids, can you still remember what the old town of
17 Makinang looked like? (PAUSE FOR 5 SECS) The old town was really dirty
19 LINUS: How about the new town of Makinang? Can you describe what it looks
20 like now after the villagers helped in cleaning it? (PAUSE FOR 5 SECS).
21 There are no more trash, mud, and junk all over the town of Makinang.

1 DANA: It is definitely sparkly and shiny once again! Now I know what we can do
3 LINUS: It’s easy, right? Keep your town clean and make sure everyone does their
4 part! Now, Ate Dana, it’s Skill Builder time once again!
5 DANA: My favorite!
7 LINUS: For our second Skill Builder activity, we are going to learn about the three
10 mark.
11 DANA: These three punctuation marks are used in three different sentences. These
13 exclamatory sentence.
14 LINUS: The declarative sentence ends with a period. A period is also called a dot.
15 DANA: On the other hand, the interrogative sentence ends with a question mark.
17 mark. Kids, do you know the differences between these three sentences?

5 LINUS: Hmmmm… let me try. Jinky goes to the town mayor to ask for help. Is that
8 DANA: That’s right, Kuya Linus! Remember to end that sentence or any
9 declarative sentence with a period when writing. Kuya Linus, can you tell us
12 with a question mark. Kids, do you know how to write a question mark?
13 (PAUSE) Can you show us how to write it in the air using your index
14 fingers?
15 DANA: Let’s do it all together. Follow me, okay? From the left, draw a curved line
16 that goes upward then, move your finger downward. Do it as if you are
18 LINUS: Continue the line by bringing your hands downward as if you are making
19 a standing straight line. Then, put a dot at the bottom. Got it? (PAUSE FOR 2
20 SECS) Alright! That’s good! Ate Dana, can you give us an example of an
21 interrogative sentence?

4 LINUS: (LAUGHS) Ate Dana is right, kids. The sentence, Are you happy today?, is
13 LINUS: It’s very simple. Let’s do it all together. Raise your hand above your head,
14 then draw a straight line going downward. Finish your exclamation point by
15 putting a dot at the bottom. And… that’s it! You have written an
18 LINUS: (LAUGHS) Gotcha, Ate Dana! I was just giving them an example of an
20 DANA: Oh, right, Kuya Linus. (LAUGHS) I thought you needed to go to the

3 prepared for you today. We hope you all learned a lot as we explored the
4 town of Makinang. Kids, I am really proud of you for reading the story and

7 DANA: As we are about to end our lesson for today, is it fine if we leave you with
8 a simple homework? (PAUSE FOR 3 SECS). (EXCITED) I’m sure you will all
10 LINUS: Yes, you will truly enjoy making this homework. The children in the town
11 of Makinang made some very cool signs with slogans to remind the people
12 to keep their town nice and clean. A slogan is a short but catchy message.
13 DANA: Do you remember the Makinang children’s slogans? I do, because they are
14 very catchy and memorable! Brush and wash. Fish out the trash. Turn trash
16 LINUS. Right, Ate Dana! For your homework, think of one thing you want to do
17 with your family and the rest of the people in your town to make it as
19 DANA: Write your slogan on a big piece of paper in big letters so everyone can see
20 it! To make it catchier, decorate it! You can color it, draw around it, cut out
