Section - B (50 Marks)

11 (a) Define the terms (i) Density (ii) specific weight (iii) surface tension . (5)
(b) The pressure inside a droplet of water is 0.02 N/cm 2 greater than the atmospheric pressure. (5)
Calculate the diameter of the droplet. Take surface tension of water with air as 70.07 N/m
12 (a) Derive Bernouli’s energy equation for an incompressible fluid flow and list all the assumptions (5)
made.
(b) A tapered pipe 5 m in length is inclined to horizontal by 15 o and carries water through 10 cm (5)
diameter and discharged out through 25 cm diameter. The inlet velocity of water is 1 m/s.
Find the pressure difference between inlet and exit.
13 (a) What is velocity of approach? What is the effect of end contraction on the discharge through (5)
notch?
(b) A broad crested weir 12 m long has a maximum discharge of 15 m3/sec. Determine the head (5)
of water on the upstream side of the weir. Take coe of discharge as 0.6. Also find head at
downstream side.
14 (a) State the Bernoulli’s theorem for compressible flow. Derive the Energy equation for adiabatic (5)
flow
(b) Calculate the Mach number at a point on a jet propelled aircraft which is flying at 900 km/hour (5)
at sea level where air temperature is 15 0C. Take k=1.4 and R = 287 j/kg K
15 (a) Derive a formula developed by Darcy for loss of head due to friction for the flow through a (5)
pipe
(b) A pipe of 5 CM diameter is carrying an oil of kinematic viscosity 0.8 stokes. If the Reynold’s (5)
number of the flow is 1800, find the velocity at radius 0.6 cm from the wall.
16 (a) A right angled triangular sheet whose base is 3 m and height is 4 m is kept in water so its (5)
vortex just touches the free water surface and sheet lies in the vertical plane. Find total
pressure force acting on the sheet.
(b) The pipe of 50 cm diameter carries the water under head of 65 m with a velocity of 6 m/s. If (5)
the pipe turns through 450 to the horizontal anticlockwise, find the magnitude and direction of
the resultant force at the bend.
17 Answer any two of the following
(a) List out minor and major losses of liquid flow through a pipe line. Discuss which one plays an (5)
