ENRICHMENT: WHAT’S MORE?

LET’S ANALYZE THIS:

Below are two questions referring to a topic. Which of

the following questions do you think is are investigative
questions (research question)? Explain your answer on the box underneath

TOPIC: COVID - 19 PANDEMIC

QUESTION 1: What does COVID stands for?

QUESTION 2: How does COVID – 19 affect the lives of people in Western Visayas?

QUESTION 3: Which countries have controlled their own respective number of cases?

QUESTION 4: How do you feel about the pandemic situation right now?

QUESTION 5: What are the different effects of COVID – 19 in terms of its economic
impact, education and interpersonal relationships?

The following questions which I think that are investigative

questions (research questions) are Questions number 2 and THINK
5. Both questions required an in-depth analysis and includes BOX
a more complex acts of investigation. From what I have
noticed from the question number 2 it seeks to find answers
on how lives of the people in Western Visayas had been
affected by COVID-19 which means it needs an interrogation,
connection and a research to address the problem. On the
question number 5, I can say that it is an investigative one
because there are many variables to be considered wherein
there are factors that has different causes, so in order to
determine the different effects of COVID-19 in terms of
economic impact, education and interpersonal relationships
the systematic and scientific approach should be done.

1. What are the new words I learned from this module? Enumerate the words
and define each according to own’s own understanding
Methodical- a characteristic of research that follows a certain process or sequence
of events.
Empirical- a characteristic of research that is backed up with evidences or objective
data.
Replicable- a characteristic of research that that can be made again.
Inquiry- encourage us to formulate questions about the object of our curiosity
resulting in investigation and questioning.

2. What is the definition of research in relation to inquiry?

Research in relation to Inquiry can be explained as the understanding that research is
iterative and depends upon asking increasingly complex or new questions whose
answers develop additional questions or lines of inquiry in any field.

3. What are the similarities and differences between research and inquiry?
The similarities between research and inquiry
 Both pushes us to formulate questions about the object of our curiosity.
 Both requires investigation and questioning.
 Both aims to provide solutions or explanations to a certain problem.

The differences between research and inquiry

 Research includes more complex acts of investigation than inquiry
 Research follows a scientific procedure of discovering truths or meaning about
such problem.

4. How can I apply my knowledge of research and inquiry in my day to day life?
For me having adequate knowledge in research and inquiry is a great achievement I
want to flourish every level of my life. Being knowledgeable in the field of research
will help me to determine problems, what caused it, how to solve it and applying the
solution. Through this I could avoid being manipulated, I could avoid making
impulsive decisions and I could avoid making any problems be worst. Moreover, I can
apply my knowledge in every simple things in life wherein this simple thing could
possibly be a help to somebody.

ENRICHMENT: WHAT’S MORE?

LET’S ANALYZE THIS:

A. From the list of weaknesses of quantitative

research, choose only THREE (3) and discuss the ways on how
you can correct or make up for its adequacies and shortcomings.
Write you answer on the THINK BOX.

1. Numerical data may be insufficient in analyzing intangible

factors, such as gender roles, socio economic status, and
THINK
social norms of a given population.
2. Responses of participants are strictly limited to what has been
BOX
asked. These responses may not be extensive in some cases.
3. Self-reported data may not be very accurate as respondents
have the tendency to underestimate or overestimate their
skills and behavior during self-assessment tasks.

From the list of weaknesses of quantitative research, I choose the

Numerical data may be insufficient, Responses of participants are
strictly limited and Self-reported data may not be very accurate
because I find it easy yet challenging to provide ways for its
adequacies and shortcomings. For the 1st weakness the problem
is that the data may not be insufficient so to solve this I am going
to go back to the scope of my study and extend its coverage as
much as possible to avoid insufficiency. For the 2nd weakness the
issue there is that the participants’ responses may be limited in
some cases I think the way on how to solve this was to add
questions that are as well relevant. And for the last weakness the
issue was the data may not be very accurate for they have the
tendency to underestimate or overestimate so I think the thing
we should do was to orient them, and enlighten them about the
topic and the roles they should accomplish as well as to indicate
to them that they should answer the task honestly.

B. Look for a professional whom you want to become in the future
(e.g. nurse, med tech, pharmacist, doctor). Conduct a short
interview. Ask how long has he/she been working in the chosen
field. With specific examples, ask how can research be beneficial
in the career that he/she is into. Write down your interview
transcription on the next page.

TRANSCRIPTION

Profession: Registered Nurse

Number of Years in the profession: 2yrs

Research has been beneficial in my career by how it paves way to a

knowledge it offers. It had broaden my perspective in the aspect of health
which allows me to think outside the box. Without research I can’t just
understand how the disease spread or where does it came from. Every
diseases I encounter somehow I do research as to how to help the patients
having those (nursing care). It improves me on my profession on how to deal
with every patient. I conclude, research plays a vital role in every profession
and has a big impact way we response to it.

GENERALIZATION: WHAT HAVE I LEARNED?

1. What are the new words I learned from this module? Enumerate the
words and define each according to own’s own understanding
Intangible- factors in research such as gender roles, socio-economic status
and social norms that plays a vital role in the study.
Causality- the relationship between cause and effect.
Efficacy- the ability to produce a desired or intended result.
Subjective- the researcher’s involvement within the subject of the study;
sometimes personally engaged.
Objective- the researcher’s involvement within the subject of the study; it has
a least involvement.

2. In your own words, describe quantitative research comprehensively.

For me quantitative research is done to determine the cause of such
phenomenon. It provides clearer presentation because it undergone thorough
gathering and analyzing of idea which will help in drawing reliable conclusions.

3. Do you agree that the strengths of Quantitative Research may

compensate for its weakness? Support your answer.
Yes, I do agree that the strengths of Quantitative Research may compensate
for its weakness. I believed that if you will not achieve or be consistent of what
is expected from you will bring you doubts and could become your weakness.
For me, same goes into research since the one who conduct studies are
humans. We humans are not perfect and sometimes we couldn’t avoid
setbacks during our study and these happenings could lead to a problem.

4. In your own opinion, what is the most important contribution of

research in the field of allied health services?
In my own opinion the most important contribution of research in the field of
allied health services was the discoveries of different medical drugs,
equipment, tools, etc. Also by conducting different studies in patients
experience it could contribute to the efficacy of patient health care. Through
research medical practitioners can improve the drugs in terms of patients’
recovery status. Lastly, research can improve the facility, management and the
hospital as a whole through asking ways of improvements and many research
methods.

In the think box, cite the challenges you think you encountered in identifying the
independent and dependent variable along with the predictor and criterion variable and how
did you manage to identify them eventually?

Actually, I do not have that hard challenges in terms of

identifying the independent and the dependent variable along THINK
with the predictor and criterion variable because I listened
attentively during class discussions and I have a prior knowledge
BOX
from my previous practical 1 class. If I find myself doubting, I
usually get my notes and analyze the meaning of such variables,
by doing such I can say that I can answer confidently.

5. What are the new words I learned from this module? Enumerate the
words and define each according to own’s own understanding
Univariate Study- Only one variable is being studied.
Bivariate Study- Two variables are being studied.
Polyvariate Study- More than two variables are being studied.
Extraneous Variables- Are also called mediating or intervening variables. It
exist during the study yet there is no effect.
Confounding Variables- when an extraneous variable affect the interaction
between the dependent and independent variables.
Predictor Variables- Variables that can change the other variable/s in a
non-experimental way.
Criterion Variables- Variables that are usually influenced by the predictor
variables.

6. Define research variables in the most concise way and according to

your own understanding.
From my own understanding research variables are characteristics or qualities
of anything that involved in a study that is changing.

7. Differentiate independent from dependent variables; predictor from

criterion variable; discrete from continuous variable; extraneous from
confounding variables.
 The difference of independent from dependent variables is that
independent variables are usually manipulated in the experiment while
the dependent variables are usually affected by the manipulation of the
independent variables.
 The difference of predictor from criterion variable is that predictor
variables change the other variable/s in a non-experimental way while
criterion variables are usually influenced by the predictor variable
meaning it is dependent to it.
 The difference of discrete from continuous variable is that continuous
variables assumes any value between a certain set of real (absolute
zero) also it can be divided or expressed in fractions while discrete
variables can only assume any whole value within the limits and it
cannot be expressed in fractions.
 The difference of extraneous from confounding variable is that when an
intervening variables that has existed doesn’t already have an effect to
the study however when the extraneous already had an effect in the
interaction it is now a confounding variables.
8. Why is it important to identify the types of variables in research? How

PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2 Senior High School

Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod
will it affect the results of your research?
Identifying the types of the variables in research is indeed important because
they will serve as a guide of the researchers to pursue their studies with
maximum curiosity. Variables drive the research process which is why
awareness, knowledge and recognition of it is not just required but is an
important part that makes research a whole.
