What Is Philippine Independence Day
What Is Philippine Independence Day
Independence Day in the Philippines is an annual holiday, celebrating the
independence of the Philippines from Spain in 1898.
The day is also known as Araw ng Kasarinlan', which means 'Day of Freedom'.
While Independence Day is only one day of official holiday, it is celebrated through 16
‘flag days’ when businesses, homes, and places of work all around the country will
proudly display the Philippine flag.
The flag, introduced in 1898, serves as a symbol of the independence of the nation. It
was designed by three women, Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina
Herboza.
Emilio Aguinaldo, the first president of the Philippines said the colors of the flag (red,
blue, and white) represent the bravery of the Philippine people, their refusal to surrender
to enemies, and their love of peace.
However, Spain and America initially refused to acknowledge the independence of the
Philippines. In fact, America took control of the territory after paying Spain 20 million
dollars!
This led to widespread revolt in the Philippines, and as a consequence, the American-
Philippine War. Eventually, in 1946, the Philippines was finally awarded full
independence, according to the Treaty of Manila.
Filipino communities in other countries around the world also choose to celebrate this
day.
