A long time ago, the frogs lived happily in marshy swamp. There was no law or rule in
the swamp. They were free to do whatever they wanted. The elder frogs thought that this was
not right. They needed someone to rule them.
So, they went up to Jupiter, the king of all gods, and pleaded, “O mighty Jupiter, send
us a king that would rule over us and maintain order in our swamp.” Jupiter laughed at their
croaking and devised a plan to teach them a lesson. He threw a huge log into the swamp,
which landed with a big splash.
The frogs were frightened at first and all of them rushed to the bank and looked at the
log. They waited for some time for the log to speak to them, but the log did not move. “Who is
this?” One of them asked. “He’s our king,” said the elders. The boldest of them went towards
the log and touched it. It still did not move. The greatest hero of the frogs jumped upon the log
and started dancing upon it. “Come my friends! He’s harmless!”

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?

In this lesson, you will study and understand the usage of context clues in finding unfamiliar
words, elements of the literary text, the three aspects of verbs, appreciate mother’s love by
giving her importance, and summarize the story read.
As you go through this lesson, remember to search for the answers to the following essential
questions:

How can you show your gratitude to your mother?

LET’S TRY THIS!

ACTIVITY NO 1: Paste the picture of your mother, then complete the statement below.

This is my Mom
My mom is __________________________________________________________________
She’s good at ________________________________________________________________
I love her because _____________________________________________________________

Process Questions:
1. What is the role of a mother?
____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________

2. What are some instances that your mother did much sacrifice for you?
____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________

A mother takes the role of a manager for the family, a teacher for her children, the
world's best chef, a household nurse, a financial controller, and many more.
One of the meaningful roles that a mother play is to nurture her children. When a
mother nurtures her children well, love and goodness are awakened in the children’s hearts.
Because of our mother’s love, we learn to love as well, and we feel God’s love more
profoundly.
DO YOU KNOW?
The words “mom,” “ma,” or “mama” are pretty universal sounds for mothers because babies’
first words typically start with the “m” sound.
In this lesson, you will learn more about finding the meaning of unfamiliar words using
context clues, inferring feelings and traits of characters in a story read, appreciating your
mother’s love by sharing her importance to your life, analyze characters in the story, and
identifying and using collective, concrete and abstract nouns.

Discuss

Let’s Read!
A mother’s love has no equal. They sacrifice a lot for their children whom they love.
The following story shows how a mother can love her son even when he disowns and despises
her.
Before we will go to our selection, let us first enhance your vocabulary by reading
about compound words and giving the meaning of the underlined word used in the context.

Compound Words

A compound word is two different words that form a new meaning when put together. It can
be in a closed form. This type of compound word means that the two words are put together
as one word to form a new meaning.
Examples: moon + light = moonlight
fire + works = fireworks
A compound word can also be in open form. This type of compound word means that the two
words are not separated but when read together they form a new meaning.
Examples: ice + cream = ice cream
post + office = post office

Identify and encircle the compound in each sentence. Then underline the words or
phrase that gives meaning to the compound word.

1. The next day at school one of my classmates said, “Your mom has only one eye!” We
are all members of the same class but they treat me differently.
2. I confronted her that day and said, “If you’re only going to make me a laughing stock,
why don’t you just die?” I was really angry because I became an object of ridicule.
3. She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her grandchildren. She was not
allowed to see the children of her son because of her condition.
4. I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. She thought that I was just going
on a trip for business purposes.
5. She chose to lose her eyesight than for his son to lose his future. She gave up the
ability to see clearly for the sake of love.

Now, let us read the selection below and know the story of a mother who sacrificed so
much for the love of his son who is ungrateful and disrespectful. Note significant details in the
story and relate them to your own experiences.

My Mom Only had One Eye

Author Unknown

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and
teachers to support the family.

There was this one day during elementary school when my mom came to say hello to me. I was so
embarrassed.

How could she do this to me? I ignored her threw her a hateful look, and ran out. The next day at
school, one of my classmates said, “Your mom has only one eye!” and the whole class burst out laughing.

I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted her that day and said,
“If you’re only going to make me a laughing stock, why don’t you just die?”

My mom did not respond. I didn’t even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I
was full of anger. I was oblivious to her feelings.

I wanted out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So, I studied really hard, and got a
chance to go abroad to study.

Then I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my
kids, and my comfortable life. Then one day, mother came to visit me. She hadn’t seen me in years and she
didn’t even meet her grandchildren.

When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I yelled at her coming over uninvited. I
screamed at her, “How dare you come to my house and scare my children! Get out of here! Now!” And to this
my mother quietly answered, “Oh I’m sorry, I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared out of
sight.

One day, I received a letter inviting me to our school reunion. I decided to go, but I lied to my wife
that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to our old shack, just out of curiosity.

My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had
wanted me to have.

“My dearest Son,

I think of you all the time. I’m sorry that I came to your house and scared your
children.
I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I may not be
able to even get out of bed to see you. I’m sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to
you when you were growing up.
You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a
mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with one eye. So, I gave you
mine.
I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place
with that eye.
With all my love to you,
your mother

“A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no
pity: it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands on its path”
- Agatha Christie
Parents give up all for kids, forgive all mistakes made by kids. There is no way to
repay what they done for kids, all we can do is try giving what they need and it is just time,
love and respect.

LET’S CONNECT!

Every Mother always makes sure that their children are safe and happy. It is the love for
their child that a mother feels that drives these feelings. No one can describe in words the feeling
that a mother has towards her children. Most people do not understand unless they become a
mother themselves. Love always encourages us in any falls which come in life.

Now, let’s explore more about a mother’s love by watching the videos below:

LET’S GENERALIZE!

Sometimes, we think our parents cannot understand us and they get in the way of our
happiness. This is why many of us have experienced rebelling against our parents at some
point especially now that we are still young. However, we should not forget that our parents
love us and all they want is the best for us. At times when they seem to be very strict, they just
want to protect us from possible harm. Aside from bringing you into the world, parents
sacrifice time, energy, and effort to make sure your needs and wants are met. Showing them
that you appreciate their efforts demonstrates a level of respect towards them. Respect their
decisions: There could be some decisions your parents make that you do not agree with. You
can try telling them your thoughts about those but if they do not accept your ideas, just accept
and respect them.

Now, read the poem below entitled “Daddy’s Day”. See how the poem shows a bond that is
strengthened through the pure love of a daughter to her father and vice versa. Nothing can
separate a parent’s true love for his/ her child, not even death.

Daddy’s Day
by Cheryl Costello- Forshey

Her hair up in a ponytail, her favorite dress tied with a bow

Today was Daddy’s Day at school, and she couldn’t wait to go
But her mommy tried to tell her, that she probably should stay home
Why the kids might not understand, if she went to school alone
But she was not afraid; she knew what just to say
What to tell her classmates, on this Daddy’s Day
But still, her mother worried, for her to face this day alone
And that was why once again, she tried to keep her daughter home
But the little girl went to school, eager to tell them all
About a dad she never sees, a dad who never calls

There were daddies along the wall in the back, for everyone to meet
Children squirming impatiently, anxious in their seats
One by one the teacher called, a student from the class

To introduce their daddy, as seconds slowly passed
At last, the teacher called her name, every child turned to stare
Each of them was searching, for a man that wasn’t there
“Where’s her daddy at?” She heard a boy call out
“She probably doesn’t have one.” Another student dared to shout
And from somewhere near the back, she heard a daddy say
“Looks like another deadbeat dad, too busy to waste his day.”

The words did not offend her, as she smiled at her friends
And looked back at her teacher, who told her to begin
And with hands behind her back, slowly she began to speak
And out from the mouth of a child, came words incredibly unique
“My daddy couldn’t be here, because he lives so far away
But I know he wishes he could be, with me on this day
Ang though you cannot meet him, I wanted you to know
All about my daddy, and how much he loves me so
He loved to tell me stories, he taught me to ride my bike
He surprised me with pink roses, and he taught me to fly a kite
We used to share fudge sundaes, and ice cream in a cone
And though you cannot see him, I’m not standing all alone
Cause my daddy’s always with me, even though we are apart
I know because he told me, he’ll forever be here in my heart”

With that here little hand reached up, and lay across her chest
Feeling her own heartbeat, beneath her favorited dress
And from somewhere in the crowd of dads, her mother stood in tears
Proudly watching her daughter, who was wise beyond her years
For she stood up for the love, of a man in her life
Doing what was best for her, doing what was right
And when she dropped her hand back down, staring straight into the crowd
She finished with a voice so soft, but its message clear and loud
“I love my daddy very much, he’s my shining star”
And if he could he’d be here, but heavens just too far

But sometimes when I close my eyes, it’s like he never went away”
And then she closed her eyes and saw him there that day
And to her mother’s amazement, she witnessed with surprise
A room full of daddies and children, all starting to close their eyes
Who knows what they saw before them, who knows what they felt inside
Perhaps for merely a second, they saw him at her side

“I know you’re with me, daddy.” To the silence she called out
And what happened next made believers, of those filled with doubt
Not one in that room could explain it, for each of their eyes had been closed
But there placed on her desktop, was a beautiful fragrant pink rose
And a child was blessed, if only a moment, by the love of her shining bright star
And given the gift of believing, the heaven is never too far.

Fathers are important in a family because they are the one who leads their own family.

best at work to support their family, in return, we show our love and respect to them by
showing care and appreciation.

LET’S CONNECT!
Parents play a pivotal role in their children’s life. They are the pillars of support,

child gets there’s nothing more comforting and soothing than their parent's arms.

LET’S GENERALIZE!

When a child is born, parents are the ones who assure unconditional love to them.
The upbringing of children is entirely dependent on the parent’s love and care. Whether it is
mental or physical growth, emotional or social development, career or financial establishment,
our parents help us in every possible way. Ask about the value of parents to those who have
lost their parents at a very early age. They know the hardships and struggles to lead a life
without parents. As children, what are we supposed to do? Of course, it is our responsibility to
respect, care for, and obey them. It is written in Ephesians 6: 1-3 “Children, obey your parents
because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. ‘Honor your father and
mother.’ This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother,
‘Things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.’ ”

So, they went up to Jupiter, the king of all gods, and pleaded, “O mighty Jupiter, send
us a king that would rule over us and maintain order in our swamp.” Jupiter laughed at their
croaking and devised a plan to teach them a lesson. He threw a huge log into the swamp,
which landed with a big splash.
The frogs were frightened at first and all of them rushed to the bank and looked at the
log. They waited for some time for the log to speak to them, but the log did not move. “Who is
this?” One of them asked. “He’s our king,” said the elders. The boldest of them went towards
