An ultrasound machine makes images so that organs inside the body can be
examined. The machine sends out high-frequency sound waves, which reflect off
body structures. A computer receives the waves and uses them to create a picture.

Types of Ultrasound

 Endoscopic ultrasound.
 Doppler ultrasound.
 Color Doppler.
 Duplex ultrasound.
 Triplex ultrasound (color-flow imaging)
 Transvaginal ultrasound.

Disadvantages of ultrasonography include the fact this imaging modality is

operator and patient dependent, it is unable to image the cystic duct, and it has a
decreased sensitivity for common bile duct stones.

Ultrasound is a useful way of examining many of the body's internal organs,

including but not limited to the:

 heart and blood vessels, including the abdominal aorta and its major
branches.
 liver.
 gallbladder.
 spleen.
 pancreas.
 kidneys.
 bladder.
 uterus, ovaries, and unborn child (fetus) in pregnant patients.
A typical ultrasound exam takes about 30 minutes to complete. It's usually
painless. However, you may have some temporary discomfort if the technician
presses on an area that is sore or tender.

Ultrasound machines generate sound waves in pulses lasting less than one
ten thousandth of a second. Pulses are used because a continuous soundwave could
generate too much heat in the tissue being examined.

Benefits of Ultrasound

They are generally painless and do not require needles, injections, or

incisions.

Patients aren't exposed to ionizing radiation, making the procedure safer than
diagnostic techniques such as X-rays and CT scans.

Ultrasound captures images of soft tissues that don't show up well on X-rays.

There are a lot of reasons why it's so expensive to see the doctor or stay in a
hospital for any amount of time, including administrative costs, multiple treatments,
drug costs, and the cost of equipment. Among that high-priced equipment is the
ultrasound machines that doctors use to diagnose patiens

A majority of ultrasounds are done externally, on the outside of your body.

The only feeling throughout the scan would be the temperature of the translucent
gel that is used and a slight moving of the transducer on your body, so the pain is
virtually non existent.

What happens if you eat or drink before an ultrasound?

Your doctor will usually tell you to fast for 8 to 12 hours before your
ultrasound. That's because undigested food in the stomach and urine in the bladder
can block the sound waves, making it difficult for the technician to get a clear
picture

Most women get an ultrasound in their second trimester at 18 to 20 weeks of

pregnancy. Some also get a first-trimester ultrasound (also called an early
ultrasound) before 14 weeks of pregnancy. The number of ultrasounds and timing
may be different for women with certain health conditions like as asthma and
obesity.
