Coding: means linking the signified (the concept) and the signifier (the sound image) done to

UNDERSTAND.

Decoding: reverse process. Here we put together the signified the signifier in our brain to
understand. Done to MEAN.

This process it was something meaning:

- DECODING + INTERPRETING: we interpret the intention of the speaker based on our

own experiences. Depending the person and its experiences it is what he/she is going
to interpret.
- Interpretar las INTENCIONES que tiene el hablante.

Sometimes we ASSOSICATE something: + or - based on our experiences.

Sometimes some associations are shared by a group of people. Ex: Brayan.

Two types of meaning:

SENSE – MEANING THAT ARE INDEPENDENT OF THE CONTEXT: lo vemos despues: ver its
just ver, nothing else. If we understand that as threat, it was because it was something in
the context that allowed you to think that. (The original meaning decoding-coding idea)

FORSE- MEANING THAT IT DEPENDT ON THE CONTEXT: the context contributes to

understand this meaning differently. (intentions)

The field of linguistics that studies SENSE it’s called SEMANTICS

Sense _SEMANTIC
Understanding process of signification. Union of the two sides of the sign it`s called
SIGNIFICATION.

level. Ex: dog : four leg animal.
 Reference is a link between what a sign signifies or means and the external
world. EX: when we see a real dog, we imagine our dog.

2 types of Sense:

 Conceptual: stable – semantic feature of a word. Ex: Dog_ animal/bark/four leg.
