Wheelchair and Easy Access Routes

Over the last 20 years we have worked to provide easier access routes. These are mainly associated
with the Coast Path. We now have some 70 routes (over 31 miles/50km). Choose one of these
walks in our search facility. They are classified into one of four levels of difficulty:

Wheelchair Paths

These are purpose built for wheelchair users and meet the BT or Fieldfare 'Countryside for all'
standard. These standards cover surface condition, slopes, path furniture, and a range of other
criteria.
Adventure Wheelchair Paths

These paths have an improved natural surface, little cross-fall and modest slopes. All introduced
obstacles to wheelchairs have been removed. Some assistance may still be needed. For these paths
we would recommend that you use a chair purpose-built, or adapted, for country terrain.

Easy Access Paths

These paths have had the least modification to ease use by people with wheelchairs. The paths
have an unimproved natural surface. All introduced obstacles to wheelchairs have been removed.
There is little cross-fall and slopes are modest. Whilst we do not claim that Easy Access paths are
of wheelchair standard, they may be practicable under good conditions. You will need assistance.

Gentle Walks or Strolls

Sections of path without stiles or long steep hills. These are not wheelchair paths but provide a
good way to enjoy the coast and countryside for anyone who may be just starting out on walking or
who find stiles or steps troublesome.

Wheelchair paths - please note:

All adventure and easy access paths have been used by some sorts of wheelchairs in good
conditions.
We do not claim that these paths are suitable for all wheelchairs.

We hope that the path descriptions in the circular walks links will help you to decide if a path is
suitable for you.
Many routes will need extra care as they are at the top of high cliffs. Please take special care when
you are passing other path users, or are turning around.

If you use a mechanical propelled chair, please limit its speed to walking pace - say 2 to 2½ miles
per hour.

Beach Wheelchairs

Beach wheelchairs were introduced to Pembrokeshire in 2006 by the County Council and since then
the National Park Authority has acquired seven beach wheelchairs to help less able people enjoy
our County's beaches.
Our beach wheelchairs are specially designed and manufactured to be pushed over sandy beaches.
They are available for hire at a number of outlets in the National Park, enabling people to gain
access to some of our finest beaches. Please refer to our list of accessible beaches when planning a
visit.

Walks for All

The walks vary in difficulty and are ideal for families with young children or pushchairs, less able
bodied people, and anyone that just wants a leisurely stroll.
Som
e walks have been surfaced to provide access for wheelchairs, others are footpaths or bridleways
where the natural surface has not been changed. As a general guide, we have divided the walks
into 'Easy Access Walks' and 'Adventure Walks'.

Easy Access Walks are the most accessible. Surfaces are hard and smooth and gradients are gentle:
any gradients steeper than 1:20 (5%) are mentioned in the directions and indicated on the walk
map.

Adventure Walks are longer, surfaces can be varied and gradients less gentle, although all
gradients steeper than 1:12 (8.3%) are mentioned in the directions and indicated on the walk map.
