Homework Set # 3

3.1 Show that the second complex exponential in

Ex (x, y, z) =[C1 cos(βx x) + D1 sin(βx x)][C2 cos(βy y) + D2 sin(βy y)]

× [A3 e−jβz z + B3 e+jβz z ]

represents a wave traveling the −z direction. Determine its phase velocity.

3.2 Consider
~ = −β 2 E
∇2 E ~

where
~ φ, z) = êρ Eρ (ρ, φ, z) + êφ Eφ (ρ, φ, z) + êz Ez (ρ, φ, z)
E(ρ,
Use the scalar Laplacian in cylindrical coordinates to demonstrate that:

Eρ 2 ∂Eφ
∇2 Eρ + − 2 − 2 = −β 2 Eρ
ρ ρ ∂φ

Eφ 2 ∂Eρ
∇2 Eφ + − 2 + 2 = −β 2 Eφ
ρ ρ ∂φ
∇2 Ez = −β 2 Ez

Use the following identities:

∂êρ ∂êφ ∂êz ∂êz ∂êρ ∂êφ ∂êz

= = =0= = = =
∂ρ ∂ρ ∂ρ ∂φ ∂z ∂z ∂z

∂êρ ∂êφ
= êφ = −êρ
∂φ ∂φ

3.3 Using large argument asymptotic forms and assuming ejωt time convention, show that Hankel functions
of the first kind represent traveling waves in the −ρ direction whereas Hankel functions of the second
kind represent traveling waves in the +ρ direction. The opposite would be true were the time variation
be assumed as e−iωt .
3.4 Show that the spherical Hankel functions of the first and second kind represent, respectively, radial
traveling waves in the −r and +r directions. Assume time variations of ejωt and large argument
asymptotic expansions for the spherical Hankel functions.
