In some cities and towns, all over the world, the high volume of traffic is a problem.

What are the causes

of this, and what actions can be taken to solve this problem?

Even though modern transportation offers unprecedented mobility, ironically, we often find traffic too inconvenient
due to congestion. But for all of us to better enjoy the convenience of traffic, there are some changes we
must consider regarding the problems that our mode of transportation faces.

One of the reasons why we have congestion is that our infrastructure cannot accommodate all the vehicles that we
use. While our main means of transportation are privately owned vehicles, most of our schedules are centered
around centralized institutions, i.e., work places, educational institutions, and commercial centers. In other words, we
go to the same places but travel on different vehicles. If each of us used public transportations like buses, we
could cut an exponential volume of vehicles on the streets. Not only that, but as we use centralized traffic more and
more, we can realize public transportation that is not only efficient but also better contoured to our personal needs.

Another reason we have congestion could be contributed to management malpractices. While many countries enjoy
the utmost standard in infrastructure, most countries in the world still have to rely on obsolete infrastructure made to
accommodate bygone modes of transportation. Due to improper management and structural malpractices, traffic
infrastructure are not always developed based on practical needs. Furthermore, due to our daily participation in
traffic, renovation means putting thousands of people’s daily schedule at risk. In order for us to recognize proper
needs in infrastructural development and maintaining a stable commute for ourselves, every person
should participate more in the legal process behind how our traffic works. That means being informed
and responsible for the changes in the way we organize our traffic. This calls for a more transparent, inclusive, and
democratic approach to traffic organization from our government.

The problem of traffic congestion is one that affects us all; therefore, we should rethink congestion in a way that is
inclusive of everyone who participates in traffic. While our mode of traffic organization started out with privately
owned vehicles and legal processes that elude our common awareness, it is us as a whole that creates the problems
in traffic as we come to face today.
