GRAPHS OF A
PIECEWISE LINEAR
FUNCTION

Prepared by: Ms. Shaina Mae Contante

Objective:

• Students understand the relationship

between physical measurements and
their representation on a graph.
Linear Function
A function whose graph is a straight
line. The rule of a linear function can
always be put into the form f(x) = mx+b

Piecewise Linear Function

A function whose graph are consists of a
straight-line segments.
Example:
• Graphing Story: (ex.1 graphing story video)

A man is at the top of the stairs walking for 3 seconds that

is 30ft high, climb down the stairs from time 3 to 5.5
seconds, then walk for 5.5 to 7 seconds at 20ft. He climbs
down the stairs again from 7 to 8.5 seconds; walk a little bit
from 8.5 to 9 seconds at 10ft and climbs down the stairs for
the third time from 9 to 11 seconds. He reached the bottom
of the stairs and walk from 11 to 12.7 seconds. He stepped
on the elevated part of the ground from 12.7 to 13 seconds.
And finally walk though at 13 seconds.
Interval:

Between 0 and 3 sec.;

Between 3 and 5.5 sec.;
Between 5.5 and 7 sec.;
Between 7 and 8.5 sec.;
Between 8.5 and 9 sec.;
Between 9 and 11 sec.;
Between 11 and 12.7 sec.;
Between 12.7 and 13 sec.;
And 13 sec onward.

The graph is made by combining pieces of nine linear

functions (it is a piecewise linear function). Each
linear function is defined over an interval of time,
represented on the horizontal axis.
Example:
• Graphing Story:(ex.2 graphing story video)

It shows a man climbing down a ladder that is 10 ft. high. At

time 𝟎sec., his shoes are at 10ft. above the floor, and at
time 𝟔 sec., his shoes are at 𝟑 ft. From time 𝟔 sec. to the 𝟖
.5 ec. mark, he drinks some water on the step 𝟑 ft. off the
ground. After drinking the water, he takes 𝟏.5 sec. to
descend to the ground, and then he walks into the kitchen.
The video ends at the 15 sec. mark.
Interval:

Between 0 and 6 sec.;

Between 6 and 8.5 sec.;
Between 8.5 and 10 sec.;
Between 10 to 15 sec
onwards
Elevation-vs-Time graph of a Person’s Motion
Describe what the person might have been doing and
list those time intervals.

Time Interval:
PIECEWISE-DEFINED LINEAR FUNCTION:

Given non-overlapping intervals on the real number line,

a (real) piecewise linear function is a function from the union
of the intervals on the real number line that is defined by
(possibly different) linear functions on each interval.
Practice Test:
Create an elevation-versus-time graphing story for the
graph and list those time intervals:
