INTRODUCTION
Aerial photography which is the art or science of getting data or information about the earth
surface from an overhead perspective from an aircraft, satellite, drones etc. with aid of a
sensor without getting in physical contact with the object of interest.
For better understanding of the course the lecturer shared us into groups and assigned each
group an Aerial photograph, we constituting group 8 was given Makoko up area.
After the assigning of the photograph by Dr Akintuyi, we in group 1 met immediately after
that class and decided we should converge on Friday 3rd of September to proceed on the
field work which we did as planned. We were unable to complete the field study that day
because of the rainfall. We had to use 3 days before we could complete the field work.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of the practical field work is to update the Aerial photograph by adding the features
found in parts of faculty of Education, Faculty of Environmental Science and Akoka and
those that are absent on the Aerial photograph.
The fieldwork also gives us the opportunity to use an Aerial photograph of an area to
navigate the actual earth surface, to be able to use QGIS to digitize features on Aerial
Photograph. Also, to check the conditions of the street lights in the school environment.

METHODOLOGY AND MATERIALS EMPLOYED.

We printed the Aerial Photograph given to us and each group member was provided with a
copy of the printed photograph which was in an A3 format. Each group members also used
jotters to list out the features on the Aerial Photograph. We also made use of the QGIS
software to tag the names of the features on the photograph with a laptop; so that it will be
easier for us to write the features. We used our phones to take some pictures of areas
under construction.
On the aerial photograph which we printed out, each member used a pencil to
demarcate/separate each features as seen on the Aerial Photograph.
The materials used include a laptop, QGIS software, pencil, jotters, pen and internet
(Google) map. We used QGIS to digitize the features on the given Aerial Photograph.
We split the group into two: The first group, comprising Erhayanmen Lucky Paul, Alatshe
Kelvin, Ogunrinde Funmilola susan, Khalia Oluwatoba Victor were tasked with the handling
of buildings (all the buildings). The second group comprising Ekwok Egana Sunday, Ezeji
Daryl, Akunne Blessing Adaku, Felix Jesi-Djaho were tasked with reports on the dumpsites,
landmark, vegetation, roads, recreational centre, eateries, power stations, and any notable
changes.
RESULT
On Friday, 6th of September, we started working on the Aerial Photograph we were given to
digitize, using QGIS software as instructed by Dr. Akintuyi and Mr. Samuel.
The Aerial Photograph assigned to us was composed of parts of The University of Lagos
Faculty of Education, the Main Gate of the University, down to the Faculty of Environmental
Science and parts of University Road, parts of St. Finbarrs Road in Akoka. Before we started
digitizing, we made use of every little info/data gotten from each members of the group to
help us get accurate results on the features and changes wherever available.
All features observed and noted in the study area is tabulated below with their number of
occurrence.

Due to the age of the Aerial photograph much changes has been witnessed over the years in
the same area of the study the photograph covered. Some notable changes are as follows:

 The UBA Park beside the Faculty of Environmental Science was previously a
vegetation area (Light forest).
 The El- Kanemi hostel in the Faculty of Education is presently under renovation/
under construction to some ultra-modern buildings. The Wema bank, situated close
to Jelili Omotola Adebisi Hall, was once a small unit with only one ATM gallery, but it
has been transformed to a bigger and beautiful building with 2 ATM galleries and a
security post.
 The Light forest close to MRS filing station is now under construction of several
buildings.
 The University of Lagos and its environment has since been changed to something
magnificent; better roads with several CCTV cameras, communications, a tidy and
welcoming environment.
Calculating the lengths of the roads, we got the following results:

ROADS LENTGTH
DUAL CARRIAGE ROADS 1170.86 Metres
MINOR ROADS 1025.80 Metres

CHALLENGES
We were faced with some challenges while carrying out our duties:

 On the first day of our field work, it rained heavily while we were carrying out our
various assignments. We got so drenched by the heavy downpour. The rain also
hindered us from working, we had to schedule for another day.
 It was a bit difficult for us to get information/data about El-Kanemi Hostel due to its
partial demolition.
 While digitizing the Aerial Photograph given to us, we had issues with the QGIS
software as it crashed so many times.
 We had series of arguments between ourselves.

LESSONS LEARNED
At the end of our field work, we were able to interprete /identify various features in the
Aerial Photograph given to us. We learned the use of Aerial Photographs for actual
navigation. We were also able to identify the various vegetation types i.e. wetlands, light
forests, heavy forests etc.
We learned the use of QGIS to digitize features on Aerial Photograph.

CONCLUSION
It is of great importance to participate in field works as it broadens one’s knowledge
practically, shedding more light and understanding on the theoretical aspects studied during
class lectures.
As geographers, the need/ importance to study Aerial Photographs cannot be over looked.
Although it wasn’t easy for us to embark on our field works due to the frequent rainfall, we
learned a lot. We were able to update some features which were not in the Aerial
Photograph given and we achieved this amidst the unfavourable weather. We also noticed
some damaged street lights. We suggest the school management should see to the repair of
the damaged street lights within the school environment.
At the end of it all it took a collective effort from everyone to make this possible though
there were disagreements at first, we learnt how to work with each other along the way.
Apart from the educational lessons learnt, we all learnt how to work with people which
helped our teamwork.
