Vectors and Forces ( Pulleys, Equilibrium, Springs)

2021-22
Vectors and Motion:
1. Vivek walks 7km in a straight line, then he turns 37° to the left and walk 10 km and after that he
turns further left by 16° and walks another 15km. How far is he from his starting point?

2. Two friends Ram and Rahim run from the same point with velocities (2iˆ  3 ˆj ) m/ s and
(iˆ  5 ˆj ) m/ s respectively. If Ram runs for 5 seconds and stops and Rahim runs for 15 seconds
and stops, find the distance between them.

3. A particle has initial position vector r  (2iˆ  10 ˆj )m and is moving with uniform velocity
(4iˆ  6 ˆj ) m/ s .How much time later will the particle be 13m from the origin?

4. A particle has a position vector r at time t given by r  [(2.3  3.6t )iˆ  (7.7  4.8t ) ˆj ]m. Find
the speed of the particle at t=2 seconds.

Vectors and Forces:

5. Find the tension T, if the strings are massless and the block is in
equilibrium. Assume mass of the block is m.

6. Find the tension T, if the strings are massless and the block
is in equilibrium. Assume mass of the block is m=20kg.

7. If the tension T in the horizontal string is T=20N, find the

mass of the block. Assume all the strings are massless and
the block is hanging at rest and g=10 m/s2

8. In the system shown, all the strings and pulleys are massless and both blocks are
at rest. If m=12kg, find T and M.

Springs:

9. In the system shown, all the strings and pulleys are

massless and both blocks are at rest. If M=20 kg, find m
and T.

10. In the system shown, the strings, pulleys and spring are massless and the block of
mass M=5kg is hanging at rest. If the spring constant is 20 N/m, find the extension
of the spring.

11. Two identical springs of natural length 3m are

connected together between two walls 6m apart. Then
a block of mass 8kg is hung at the point connecting the
two springs. When released, the mass oscillates and
finally comes to rest at a point 4m below where it was
released find the force constant of the springs.

12. A spring of force constant 30 N/m and natural length L=√3 m

is tied at one end to a wall and at the other end to a bead
that can slide on a smooth vertical pole. Initially the string is
horizontal and then the bead is released. After a few
oscillations, the bead comes to final rest at a point 3m below
its initial position. Find the mass of the bead.
