How does culture I grew up greatly influenced my self-understanding? (minimum of ten (10) sentences
to a maximum of fifteen (15) sentences only)

-According to a website named Opinion Front, our behavioral patterns, belief systems, principles, and ways
of living are the derivatives of our culture. I do believe that culture is important as it is the invisible bond
that ties people together. The art, literature, language, and religion of a community represent its culture. We
do have a different culture in different nations and locality and thus also greatly influenced the way of our
living and understanding differently. The culture I grew up in is the main factor in how I behave and view
the world. How we perceive things is largely affected by our judgment skills, preconceived notions, attitude,
and emotions that are closely linked with our culture. Our culture determines the structure of our thinking,
which influences our perceptions. As an example, Filipino culture is to live and be with their own family
often even when they get married and get older. My self-understanding of this is that we have the sense and
value of being family-oriented and that we gave importance to all the matters involving our families or
relatives. This value that I’ve been known and grew up with since I was born will be marked in the way I
view being always together as a family that is different from other countries. Research has shown that our
culture does play a role in the way our brain processes information and reacts to stimuli. Our self-
understanding which is part of our personality will be different from each other as the culture we’ve lived
in and are accustomed to is different. Our religion, traditions, customs, all a part of our culture, play a major
role in shaping our personalities. The way we perceive a situation and react to it depends largely on what
we have learned from the environment and the way we have been brought up.
