ARTS AND CRAFTS OF HIGHLANDS AND LOWLANDS LUZON:
INTRODUCTION
Highlands Luzon comprises different regions. Region I ( Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte,
Pangasinan and La Union ) Cagayan Valley( Batanes, Nueva Vizcaya and Isabela, CAR
(Ifugao, Mt. Province, Kalinga, Abra, Apayao). Lowlands Luzon includes Central Luzon
(Bulacan, Pampanga, Zambales, Nueva Ecija and bataan) CALABARZON ( Cavite, Laguna,
Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) and Bicol region.
The different provinces are known for their exemplary artworks and crafts. As
shown in their representative arts and crafts, some provinces are also good in sculpture,
weaving, tattooing, and jewelry making.

Tattooing is another form of art of the Kalinga. Because it usually covers the chest
and arms, it may be considered as clothing and body decoration. It also signifies a rite of
passage from youth to adulthood, a mark of heroism, bravery, and status in the
community. The design consists of geometric patterns and lines.

Zambales
Spanish Gate- is one of the historical landmarks located in
Olongapo City. It was built in 1885. It used to serve as the west
gate of the armory of the town. It has high walls made up of
locally-quarried stones connected to the south gate that faces
the waterfront. It was also used as a jail during the Spanish
and American occupations.

Bataan
Abucay Church or the Saint Dominic de Guzman Parish
Church- established in 1587. This is an example of
Renaissance architecture because of its vertically single - or
double-divided columns and triangular pediments. It has a five-
layer bell tower ornamented with semicircular arched windows.

The Philippines is diverse with its rich culture and traditions, as reflected in its arts
and crafts. Honed by history and influences of foreign countries that produce various
forms of arts.
Notable for religiosity as seen in architecture, like the Spanish Gate and The San
Andres Apostol Parish Church of Masinloc of Zambales. The Parish of the Three
Kings in Gapan, Nueva Ecija. The Abucay church in Bataan and the stone houses of
Batanes remained standing through the tests of time, where materials were locally
found and have foreign touches. The Bul-ul of Ifugao and wood carving of Laguna are
some of the Philippines' finest sculptural arts. Accessories, clothing, and ornaments that
depict the country’s love for beauty and perfection. Which sources flourished from the
highlands to the lowlands. Visible from weaved textile like the kain, a wrap-around
skirt or tapis, that Kalinga women wear. The lufid a short and narrow wrap-around

from Bolinao Pangasinan, and pottery like burnay from Ilocos.

interesting design. Thru elements and principles of art, we can easily appreciate an

Some arts and crafts may differ in names but are almost similar in function. The
materials used are mostly locally available, which flourishes in the area. The art technique
used is the same, but the cultural touch and traditional influence differ from one region to
