Do you get it?

(Do you understand it?)

We use the verb GET a lot in English. it can mean many things from obtaining, receiving, buying
something to arriving somewhere, or a change of state, such as temperature, age, light to dark or
vice versa.

Here are some example sentences where GET can replace one or more words in the sentence
that are too formal. Rewrite the sentence using GET to make the sentences more like informal
spoken English.

Example:

I received my new passport today.

I got my new passport today

I looked in the mirror this morning and realised I’m becoming old

She bought a new jacket in Milan but didn’t like it and sold it on eBay for which she
received half the money she paid for it.

He’s becoming very excited because he obtained his driving license last week and his
father says he will buy him a car.

He just arrived home and was very irritable because he was coming very hungry.

It becomes dark very quickly in the woods and it’s easy to become anxious with all the
strange sounds - you’ll want to arrive home as quickly as possible.

I won the talent contest yesterday and received a prize worth £2000

It’s only May and it’s already becoming much hotter outside than expected. We’ll need to
buy some cooler clothing.
