In the previous activities, you were able to form sentences. You can
recall that there are two types of sentences. What are these? Look
closely at the table below.

A B

Column A contains sentences that ask questions. They are called
asking sentences. An asking sentence ends with a question mark.

Column B shows sentences that tell about somethings . They are

called telling sentences. A telling sentence ends with a full stop or
period.

Other examples:

typhoon? 2. People must prepare for it.

Let’s see how these sentences appear in books. Look at the

underlined sentences. They end with a period. They are declarative
sentences. Scan a few italicized sentences. They end with a question
mark. Right? They are called interrogative sentences.

The Philippines is a country prone to typhoons. Why is this so?

It is because the Philippines is located right beside the Pacific Ocean
where storms form and eventually develop into typhoons. On
average, 20 typhoons hit the country every year. These typhoons can
endanger the lives of people and destroy billions of property because
they bring powerful winds and heavy rains. Aside from these
floodwaters, landslides, and diseases also come in.

How can people like us avoid or minimize the unpleasant

effects of typhoons? There is a way. We should follow certain
precautionary measures or survival tips on what to do before, during,
and after a typhoon.
To help you with these, here are some tips from the Philippine
Red Cross that will guide you on what to do.
Before the typhoon

 Store an adequate supply of food and clean water. Prepare

foods that need not be cooked.
 Keep flashlights, candles, and battery-powered radios within
easy reach.
 Always keep yourself updated with the latest weather report.

During the typhoon

 Stay inside the house.

 Always keep yourself updated with the latest weather report.
 If safe drinking water is not available, boil water for at least 20
minutes. Place it in a container with cover.
 Keep an eye on lighted candles or gas lamps.
 Do not wade through floodwaters to avoid being electrocuted
and contracting diseases.
 If there is a need to move to an evacuation center, follow these
reminders.
 Evacuate calmly.

After the typhoon

 If your house was destroyed, make sure that it is already safe

and stable when you enter.
 Beware of dangerous animals such as snakes that may have
entered your house
 Watch out for live wires or outlet immersed in water.
 Do not let water accumulate in tires, cans, or pots to avoid
creating a favorable condition for mosquito breeding.

telling sentences from the tips and write an asking sentence about it.
You can react to the telling sentence by means of an asking sentence.
