IT 316L NETWORKING 1

INTRODUCTION

Doing a simulation that replicates a deployment and cabling connections of a

device. Using a Cisco Packet Tracker, I simulated a connection between
switches and PC devices. This activity will allow students to understand basic
connections using the packet tracer. Doing so, using the simulator will allow us
to think of “what if” or “what will happen” that makes things more interesting.
Using this we can try and build, configure, and troubleshoot networks using this
virtual equipment and simulate connection scenarios.

LEARNING ACTIVITY 3

DEPLOYMENT AND CABLING OF NETWORK DEVICES

OBJECTIVES

• Distinguish how to deploy and cable network devices

• Identify the devices available for deployment
• Identify the cable connectors for each device
• Create valid connections of the devices using the appropriate cable connectors

BACKGROUND / SCENARIO

In this learning activity file, you will learn how to locate, deploy, and cable
multiple types of devices.

PROCEDURES:

Step 1: Open the Packet Tracer

Your screen should look like figure 1 shown below.

Figure 1. Packet Tracer Environment

Note: If the file does not open, make sure you have properly installed the Packet
Tracer application program.

Step 2: Learn how to deploy devices.

Your screen should look like figure 2 shown below.

Figure 2. Presented Graphical User Interface Design

Note: In this learning activity, your task is to practice using the Device-Type Selection
box.

Figure 3. Device Type Selection Box

IT 316L NETWORKING 1

• Navigate the Device Type Selection Box to familiarize you on the following
icon.

Note: In this learning activity, your task is to practice and study how to deploy switches

Figure 4. Device Type Selection Box - Network Devices - Switches

• Point at the lower row icons until you see the one labeled Switches.
• Click on that icon and you will see the devices in the Device-Specific
Selection box change
• The top row of icons represents categories of devices and the bottom row
represents subcategories.
• Hover at the top row of icons slowly and look for the Label box between the
rows; the names of the categories will appear.
• Now point at the lower row icons and you will see their names appear.

Fi g ure 1. Categories of devices available

Figure 5. Different Switches Available

• A click on the Switches icon shows the switches available.

• Please deploy two 2960 switches.
• Place them over the Switch0 and Switch1 labels in the workspace.

Note: In this learning activity, your task is to practice and study how to deploy PCs

Figure 6. End Devices Available

• Now click on the End Devices category in the Device-Type Selection box
and deploy six PCs.

Figure 7. End Devices PC

• If you are unsure of which device is the PC, just point at the device in the
Device-Specific Selection box and look at the label area below the devices;
it should say PC-PT.
• You do not have to select the PC icon eight times to deploy them. (There is
a shortcut).

Note: If you want to put devices of the same type onto the workspace, hold down the
<CTRL> key as you click on the device in the Device -Specific Selection Box.

• Hold down the <CTRL> key and click on the PC in the Device -Specific
Selection Box and click on the labels PC1, PC2, PC3, PC4, PC5, PC6,
PC7.
• To cancel the operation, click on the Cancel Symbol where the PC was in
the Device -Specific Selection Box.

• Your workspace should now look like this:

Figure 8. Packet Tracer Workspace

• After this, we are now going to connect the PCs to the switches.

Note: If you used the key to do multiple copies, remove it by clicking on the delete
indicator .

Step 3: Learn how to deploy Cable, connect End Devices and Switches.

Note: In this learning activity, your task is to practice using the Cable-Type Selection
box and how to connect End Devices and switches.

Figure 10. Packet Tracer Workspace Cable-Type Selection Box

• Click on the category that looks like a lightning bolt labeled Connections. See
figure 10.

Figure 11. Cable-Type Selection Available

• In the Device-Specific Selection box, there will appear a series of cable types.

Figure 12. Cable-Type Selection - Copper Straight-Through cable

• Select the Copper Straight-Through cable type.

• Now point at the center of PC0 and click on it.
• You will see a pop-up menu appear showing the cable connection types.
• Point at PC and click on the FastEthernet0 selection.
• A wire will appear anchored to the PC.
• Point at Switch0 and click on it.
• Another pop-up menu will appear with a much larger set of selections.
• Point at the device and click on the FastEthernet0/1 selection.
• The cable will now be connected, and two link lights will appear, one green
and one orange.
• After a while the orange light will turn green for reasons you will understand
as you learn about networking. (See figure 13)
• Next, we are going to cable all eight PCs to the switches.
• Either select the cable each time or use the key just like in the first activity.
• This is the set of connections to be done:

PC1 FastEthernet0 to Switch0 FastEthernet0/2

PC2 FastEthernet0 to Switch0 FastEthernet0/3
PC3 FastEthernet0 to Switch1 FastEthernet0/4
PC4 FastEthernet0 to Switch1 FastEthernet0/1
PC5 FastEthernet0 to Switch1 FastEthernet0/2
PC6 FastEthernet0 to Switch1 FastEthernet0/3
PC7 FastEthernet0 to Switch1 FastEthernet0/4

Figure 13. Cable-Type Selection - Copper Straight-Through Connection

• Now we need a different type of cable to connect the two switches.

Figure 14. Cable-Type Selection - Copper Cross-Over cable

• Select a Copper Cross-Over cable.

• Click on it and then point at and click on Switch0.
• From the pop-up menu select the Gigabit0/1 interface near the bottom of the
list.
• Then point at and click Switch1 and select the same interface from this list.
• The cable will appear and both link lights will be orange but will eventually
turn to green after about a minute.

• The completed activity should look like the illustration below:

Figure 16. Learning Activity Final Output

Note: If your workspace looks like figure 16, save the file using the filename format:
LA3Lastname.pkt

Example: LA3Verceles.pkt

• Take a selfie picture of your Final Output and Exit Packet Tracer.

Note: If the workspace does not look like figure 16, you might want to try the activity
again to practice.
LEARNING ACTIVITY REFLECTION OUTCOMES

a. Brief background of the location/venue you accomplished the Learning

Activity.
I simulated a connection through Cisco Packet Tracer which can be very useful
since it is free and easy to access.

b. My Memorable Picture while performing the Learning Activity 3

Figure 1. My Selfie picture with my Learning Activity Final Output

Note: Please follow the format:

• For the first paragraph, write a simple description after the screenshot.
• For the second paragraph, discuss what you have technically learned after
this activity.

Note: Evidence Selfie picture, description and discussion is a must.

c. Personal Experience

i. Explain what you have learned from the Learning Activity.

- I learned how simpler things are if they are accurately connected.
Which applies to computers devices and basically anything that can
connected to a server or an internet.

ii. Explain what you have felt during the Learning Activity.
- I felt excited because it is a new thing for me and I like exploring other
things that are out of my field. So trying something new intrigues me
so this experience open a new path for me to study and learn.

iii. Explain what you plan to do after the Learning Activity.

- Doing this activity makes me curious a lot. So I intend to study how to

packet tracer works so that in the future I could use it without any help
and I could probably explain things if someone ask me to.

Congratulations!
