Stressing information in sentences - Expressing Likes and Dislikes

You add emphasis or stress to the words in a sentence that are the most important.

You can change the word you stress if another word is more important, such as a like or
dislike. Stressed words can also be adjectives like big, difficult and very.

Example: I don't like that shirt. The word "don't" is stressed.

Example

Likes I like my new sweater and sunglasses.

I adore everything in that store.
I love your new jacket and tie.

Dislikes He doesn't like shopping very much.

I really don't like shopping.
I hate waiting in line.

The Long i Sound

To make the Long i sound:

Step 1: First, move your tongue towards your bottom teeth so it sits low in the mouth.
Step 2: Close your jaw slightly and move your tongue upward until it is near the top of your
mouth, behind your teeth.

This is similar to the position of a y sound.

The Long i Sound in Words

Spelling Example

igh night, fight, light

i_e nice, spice, rice

ie pie, tie, die

-y ply, sky, dry

-y- cycle, dynamic
