Individual and Dual Sports
The word “sport” comes from the Old French desport meaning “leisure”, with the oldest
definition in English from around 1300 being “anything humans find amusing or
entertaining”
Sports pertains to any form of competitive physical activity or game that aims to use,
maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing enjoyment to participants
and, in some cases, entertainment to spectators.
Sports is usually governed by a set of rules or customs, which serve to ensure fair
competition, and allow consistent adjudication of the winner.

Sports is classified into:
INDIVIDUAL SPORTS
Played by one participant on each competing side.
DUAL SPORTS
Played by two competing pairs.
TEAM SPORTS
Played by three or more players.
EXAMPLES OF INDIVIDUAL SPORTS
Martial Arts
- Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practiced for a number of
reasons such as self-defense; military and law enforcement applications; competition; physical,
mental, and spiritual development; entertainment; and the preservation of a nation’s intangible
cultural heritage.
Kickboxing
- Kickboxing is a group of stand-up combat spots based on kicking and punching, historically
developed from karate mixed with boxing. Kickboxing, is practiced for self-defence, general fitness, or
as a contact sport. Japanese kickboxing originated in the late 950s, with competitions held since then.
Fencing
- Fencing is a sport in which two competitors fight each other using very thin swords. The
ends of the swords are covered and the competitors wear protective clothes, so that they do not hurt
each other.
Swimming
- Swimming is an individual or team racing sports that requires the use of one’s entire body
to move through water. The sport takes place in pools or open water.
Tennis
- Tennis is a racket sport that can be played individually against a single opponent or
between two teams of two players each. Each player uses a tennis racket that is string with cord to
strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent’s court.
Wrestling

throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling, holds. … A wrestling bout is a physical
competition, between two (occasionally more) competitors or sparing partners, who attempt to gain
and maintain a superior position.
Running
- Running is both a competition and a type of training for sports that have running or
endurance components. … Running races are contests ti determine which of the competitors is able
to run a certain distance in the shortest time. Today, competitive running events make up the core of
the sport of athletes.
Skiing/Snowboarding
- Skiing and snowboarding are ways of moving over snow with boards attached to the foot,
practiced mostly as recreation or sport, but often as conveyance. Skiing is a kind of sport that uses a
pair of skis to travel over snow. The skis are bound to boots, and progress is one foot at a time. On the
other hand, snowboarding involves traveling on snow on a single snowboard attached to boots.
Snowboarding is inspired by surfing, skiing and skateboarding.
Cycling
- Cycle sport is competitive physical activity using bicycles. There are several categories of
bicycle racing including road bicycle racing, cyclo-cross, mountain bike racing, track cycling, BMX, and
cycle speedway.
Weightlifting
- Olympic weightlifting, or Olympic-styleweightlifting, often simply referred to as
weightlifting, is a sport in which the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded
with weight plates. The two competition lifts in order are the snatch and the clean and jerk.

Dual Sports?
Dual sports is a type of sports that are played by two people playing against each other.

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the learners are expected to:
1. Understand the games history and its development.
2. Identify the Different Equipment used in the game and the different parts of a badminton court.
3. Differentiate Badminton with other racket sports.
INTRODUCTION
- Badminton is officially the fastest of all racket sports. Players can hit the shuttlecock at speeds of up
to 180mph (288kph) toward their opponent. But, it is not just all about speed; a player can expect to
run up to four miles (6.4km) around the court during a match whilst having the agility to maintain
energy-busting rallies.
- Badminton is a racket sport played by either SINGLES or DOUBLES.
