Installation of Fire Dampers, Separation Between

Fire Dampers and Construction Elements
The direct field of application in BS EN1366-2:2015 references the separation between Fire Dampers and Fire Dampers and
Construction Elements. The standard states that there must be:

1. 200 mm between fire dampers installed in separate ducts.

2. 75 mm between fire damper and a construction element (wall/floor) – e.g. for a damper in a wall, this is the distance
between the damper casing (largest dimension) mounted in the supporting construction and a wall or floor adjacent to
that supporting construction.

Whilst the standard does not specify where the 200mm is measured from, we have taken it to be the damper case as per the
75mm rule for a construction edge.

Where the dampers are fitted with an I/F, the measurement is taken from the outside of the I/F, as it is not possible to measure
from the outside of the damper case. On a DWFX-C, the measurement is taken from the case, however with regards to the
construction edge rule, we have increase the 75mm to 125mm to allow sufficient room to tighten up the nuts on the drop rods.

Whilst the dimensions show the minimum clearance that can be achieved, this document must be read in conjunction with
the wall manufacturers specification, which must always be followed. If a manufacturer wall system has a minimum
clearance of 250mm between openings, then this takes precedence over our guidance. Likewise an IF frame system must
always have at least one course of bricks between two dampers, however wall manufacturers guidance must always be
followed as the required wall integrity fire rating must be maintained.

All drop rods must be sized accordingly to take the respective loads of the attached dampers (When two dampers have to be
supported by the same rods).

This document refers only to standard test installations. Where a product may have been tested and classified to an installation
method that contradicts this document, for example up against a ceiling slab, then that will take precedence over the relevant
part of this document, however the guidance from the wall manufacturers installation system must still be followed.

Due to policy of continuous product development the specification and details contained herein are subject to alteration
without prior notice.
