COMPACT LIVING – THE SMALL SUSTAINABLE

HOMES

INTRODUCTION
Compact Living is a series of articles devoted to unique concepts and designs
for small but functional living spaces, such as tiny houses and apartments,
mobile homes, and space-saving furniture. Small house is based on the idea of
living small or” living with less”. It encourages people to downsize their lives
and specially their living foot print. A house has come down to its basic
necessity with more importance given to its functionality and open spaces. With
foldable and inbuilt furniture, and an entire house can fit in one room area.
Introducing small homes in India and using sustainable materials in them can
fulfil every Indian citizen's dream of "Housing for All" on a very low budget.

PROBLEM
1- The increase in population and urbanization has led to widespread concern
about the resulting expansion of the construction land. This is really problematic
in housing market.
2- As all are aware that buildings are the major source of releasing carbon
dioxide in the air, sustainability is the only choice to decrease the same by
choosing right kind of materials.
These two are the biggest challenges for the housing sector today, concerns
affordability and environmental impact.

AIM
To study the small houses and the sustainable design elements required to adapt
within small houses in India.
OBJECTIVES
• To study the small house requirements which will cater all the needs of a
small house.
• To look for unique and important features within a house that is designed
to have a small square footage area.
• To identify and study the different sustainable design aspects for small
houses.
