GLA JOINS RELIGIOUS FREEDOM LEADERS IN A U.S. SUPREME

COURT AMICUS BRIEF IN THE “PRAYING COACH” CASE

Alexandria, Virginia – The Global Liberty Rule of Law and Legal Defense Fund
(a.k.a., Global Liberty Alliance) joined a Supreme Court amicus brief filed by Advancing
American Freedom, Inc. and more than 70 other groups and leaders in the case the media
has called the “Praying Coach Case,” or Kennedy v. Bremerton School District.

Five years ago, Washington state high-school football coach Joseph Kennedy was
suspended from his coaching job because he refused to stop his long-time practice of
kneeling and praying for 15-30 seconds after every game. Team members often joined
Coach Kennedy for the mid-field prayer that sometimes would include a motivational
talk. Bremerton high school officials ordered him to stop praying with the students, and
when he refused, Coach Kennedy was fired. A Marine, coach Kennedy has been fighting
for his fundamental rights ever since.

“No government or private entity must ever interfere with freedom of religion,
conscience, and belief. Fundamental rights are sacrosanct. Therefore, GLA proudly
stands with Coach Kennedy and fellow religious liberty leaders in the brief to the
Supreme Court,” said Jason Poblete, President, Global Liberty Alliance.

The case was initially filed in the Ninth Circuit and wound its way up to the U.S.
Supreme Court. The Ninth Circuit’s latest court decision will affect the First Amendment
rights of teachers and other public employees and, “[if left intact, the Ninth Circuit’s overt
hostility to personal religious practice would drum the faithful out of public life,” the
brief states. The amicus curiae brief is attached.
