DEEP BREATHING EXERCISES

DEFINITION
Deep Breathing exercises hyperventilate the alveoli and prevent them from collapsing again,
improve lung expansion and volume, help to excel anesthetic gases and mucus, and facilitate
oxygenation of tissue.

TEACHING TO USE AN INCENTIVE SPIROMETER
DEFINITION
Incentive spirometry provides visual reinforcement for deep breathing by the patient. It assists
the patient to breathe slowly and deeply, and to sustain maximal inspiration, while providing
immediate positive reinforcement.__________________________________________

PURPOSE
To encourages the patient to maximize lung inflation and prevent or reduce atelectasis._____

____________________________________________________________________________

EQUIPMENT
Incentive spirometer, Stethoscope, folded blanket or pillow, and PPE as indicated__________

CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE, DURING and AFTER THE PROCEDURE:

Reinforce importance of continued use by postoperative patients upon discharge.__________
____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________

THINGS TO DOCUMENT AFTER THE PROCEDURE:

Documentation should include that the incentive spirometer was used by the patient, the
number of repetitions, and the average volume reached. Document patient teaching and patient
response, if appropriate.__________________________________________________________
