Video display devices

The display devices is an output device used to represent the information in the
form of images (visual form). Display systems are mostly called a video monitor or
video display unit (VDU).

Display devices are designed to model , display , view , or display information the
purpose of display technology is to simplify information sharing , there are
different ways to represent an object on the screen:

1. Raster-Scan Displays: Raster scan display are a graphical monitor that use
cathode ray tubes , in raster scan system electron beam sweeps across the screen ,
from top to bottom covering one row at a time . a pattern of illuminated pattern of
spots is created by turning beam intensity on and off as it moves across each row .
a picture definition is stored at frame buffer and it holds intensity values for all
screen point and this intensity values are restored from frame buffer and painted on
the screen one row at a time.
ADVANTAGES :
- Real life images with different shades can be displayed
- Color range available is bigger than random scan display
DISADVANTAGE:
- Resolution is lower than random scan display
- More memory is required
- Data about the intensity of all pixel has to be stored

2. Random-Scan Displays : here in Random-scan Display the electron beam is

directed only to the area of screen where an image has to be drawn , it draws
pictures one line at a time (also called vector displays) . it can draw and refresh
component lines of a picture in any specified sequence.

= To Draw a triangle (ABC)

= First draw line A - B
B
A
= Second draw B - C
B

A C
= Third draw A - C
A

B C

ADVANTAGES:
- Higher resolution as compared to raster scan display
- Produces smooth line drawing
- Less memory required
DISADNATAGES:
- Realistic images with different shades cannot be drawn
- Color limitations

3. Direct view storage tubes: Storage tube is the ability of the screen to retain the
image which has been projected against it , thus avoiding the need to rewrite the
image constantly . we use two guns primary gun( to store the picture pattern) and
secondary gun( to maintain picture display)
ADVANTAGES:
- No refreshing is needed
- High resolution
- Cost is very less
DISADVANTAGES:
- It is not possible to erase the selected part of a picture
- It is not suitable for dynamic graphics application
- If a part of picture is to modify , then time is consumed

4. Flat panel display : The flat panel display refers to a class of video devices that
have reduced volume , weight and power requirement compare to cathode ray tube.
ADVANTAGES:
- High resolution
- Large screen size is also possible
- less volume
- less weight
- Flicker free display
DISADVANTAGES:
- poor resolution
- Wiring requirement anode and the cathode is complex
- Its addressing is also complex

5. Liquid crystal display (LCD): is a type of flat panel display which uses liquid
crystal in its primary form of operation .they have very large and varying set of use
cases for consumers and businesses , as they are commonly found in smart phones,
tv and computer monitors.

6. Three dimensional viewing devices:A three-dimensional (3D) viewing device,

comprising: a body adapted to externally connect to a head-worn device, having a
space therein, and a base side and opposite lateral sides neighboring thereto, the
body comprising two openings symmetrically formed on the opposite lateral sides
respectively; two displays disposed in the space; two light sources disposed in the
space at the base side, and oriented toward the two displays respectively; and two
sets of projection lenses disposed in the space at the two openings respectively,
adapted to project the images of the two displays out of the two openings toward
the two eyes of the head-worn device user, respectively; wherein the two displays
are disposed such that the images thereon are projected toward the two sets of
projection lenses by the two light sources, respectively.

7. Stereoscopic and Virtual-Reality Systems:Stereoscopy is intrinsic to

VR filmmaking. “Stereoscopy,” refers to a technique for creating a sense of depth
for an image that makes each eye focus in harmony (the way binoculars do). The
term comes from the Greek word στερεός (stereos), which means “solid” and
σκοπέω (skopeō), meaning “to see.”

Essentially, human vision can be described as combination of two perspectives –

those from the right eye and left eye–into a single image. The bi-zonal input allows
the brain to perform computations in milliseconds to determine distance, speed and
dimension. In much the same way, stereoscopic video is designed to give each eye
information to enrich a viewing experience with depth and dimension.
