paper and in various water purification processes. What is the formula mass (amu) of
this compound?
Answer: 342.17

II. Calculation of Percent Composition


Aspirin is a compound with the molecular formula C9H8O4. What is its percent
composition? (Molar mass - C9H8O4 -180.159 g/mole)

Answer: 99%
III. Determination of Empirical Formulas
A sample of the black mineral hematite, an oxide of iron found in many iron ores,
contains 34.97 g of iron and 15.03 g of oxygen. What is the empirical formula of
hematite?

IV. Determination of Molecular Formula


Nicotine, an alkaloid in the nightshade family of plants that is mainly responsible for the
addictive nature of cigarettes, contains 74.02% C, 8.710% H, and 17.27% N. If 40.57 g
of nicotine contains 0.2500 mol nicotine, what is the molecular formula?
