IS IT NECESSARY FOR TEACHERS TO LEARN

ABOUT THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM? WHY?
Definitely. Curriculums are created to make sure that every
teacher is on the same page. This is also to assure that each
student gets the required and quality education that they
deserve. The curriculum serves as the map of learning and
instruction for a specified field and/or course of time. Hence,
every teacher should not just ‘learn’ about the curriculum but
also ‘apply’ and ‘manifest’ it in their respective classrooms.

WRITE A PERSONAL DEFINITION

OF THE CURRICULUM
The curriculum is the detailed list of subjects and courses
with its respective learning objectives, instruction,
assessment, and/or suggested materials to make sure
that the competencies required will be attained by each
student after a specific program or course of time. It
serves as a map of the overall educational system.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND POSSIBLE

PITFALLS OF HAVING AN OFFICIAL CURRICULUM
PRESCRIBED BY THE SCHOOL?
Since we have established that curriculum serves as a ‘map’ of
an educational system enclosed with subjects, learning goals,
instruction, etc. It is beneficial for the teachers as it gives an
outline and flow of the things they need to use for instruction.
Hence, this can lessen the work of the teacher in terms of
looking for possible materials, or thinking of objectives for a
specific lesson, or preparing for the next lessons. All they need
to do is align it with its objectives in the curriculum. On the
other hand, having an official curriculum prescribed by the
school has two (2) disadvantages. First, we cannot deny the
fact that there are predictable and unpredictable instances
that occur and everything can happen. Just like natural
disasters, or the pandemic caused by COVID-19. And with these
circumstances, having an official and prescribed curriculum will
be challenged. Hence, the overall educational system will be
affected. And once this is affected, it will not be easy to
recalibrate and redirect, as it requires a huge amount of time.
Second and last, we live in a diverse world. Everyone has their
intelligence, strengths, and weaknesses. Therefore, a prescribed
curriculum, given its scope and limitations, cannot cover and
include all of the students. Inclusion can be a challenge with a
standardized curriculum.
