WEEK 4

Course Objective : At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

3. Compare the different news writing techniques and formats.

PARTS OF EDITORIAL PAGE

 Editorial Column- A personal opinion written by the columnist himself

 Editorial Cartoon- usually a caricature emphasizing a simple point

 Editorial Liner- a short statement or quoted saying placed at the end of editorial column or editorial to
drive home a message

 Letter to the Editor- a letter sent by the reader giving his personal views on certain aspects

PARTS OF THE FRONT PAGE

 Nameplate- the engraved or printed name of the newspaper

 Ears- the little boxes on either side of the nameplate

 Banner- the principal headline bearing the boldest and biggest type

 Running Head- a headline made up of two or more lines

 Headline- the title of any news story

 Deck- a subordinate headline placed immediately below its mother headline , also known as bank or
readout

 Lead- the beginning of a news story and answers the questions who, what, where, how and why

 Cut- a photo or illustration

 Cutline- descriptive info appearing with a piece of “art” , also called a caption.

 Photo credit- a reference to the source of a photograph

 By-Line – name of the writer appearing above the article.

 News story- the whole story of an event composed of the lead and the text which is the elaboration of the
lead.

TYPES OF A NEWSPAPER

Local news-news that takes place within the country

Foreign News- News that takes place outside the country

Dateline News- an out-of-town news story

Weather News- usually a boxed forecast of the area, sometimes include the temperature, wind direction,
and velocities.
