Healthcare in Karnataka

In December 2007, Bangalore ranked 2nd among the 593 districts in the country in terms of
existence of health facilities. Chennai tops the list. Bangalore rural district stood at an
impressive 67. The National Population Stabilization Fund (NPSF), in collabroration with
National Informatics Center [NIC], has undertaken a unique exercise to create maps which
show the existence of health facilities in each district across the country.

In Bangalore, only 26% women have three or more children (rural is at 44%), while the
contraceptive prevalence rate is 83%. The under-five mortality rate too is encouraging at
14% but for rural it stands at 71%. More than 3 ANC [ante-natal care] visits in rural
Bangalore is at 87% and Bangalore city is at 58%.

Only 10 districts in Karnataka have below-100 ranking, where was in Kerala 4 districts rank
below 10.

Bangalore is finding a place in the globa map for advanced spinal surgery due to the growing
number of spinal surgeons in the Bangalore. Every month, Hosmat attends to 2-3 patients -
mostly from Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Maldives, Bangladesh and Africa. As of October
2007, the state government has chalked out an ambitious plan to acquire around 500 acres
of land near the Devanahalli International Airport for a super-speciality Health Park. With
an increasing number of super-speciality hospitals, Bangalore has become increasingly
popular in the field of health tourism. However, just like any other govt mega plan, the
Health Park has been just on paper.
