Mechanics of Deformable Bodies
• Purpose of Strength of Materials

• Difference from Mechanics of Rigid Bodies

• Concept of Stress

• Units of Stress

• Types of Stress
Strength of Materials
Deals with the elastic behavior of loading materials, relationships between externally
applied loads and internal resisting forces associated deformations.

Purpose:

• To ensure that structure will be safe against the maximum internal effects that
may be produced by any combination of loadings.
Rigid Bodies and Deformable Bodies
• Static / Dynamics: Determine the force required at point P to support the load
W; assumed the crowbar to be rigid enough to permit the desired action

• Strength of Material: investigate the bar itself to be sure that it will neither break
nor be flexible that it bends without lifting the load
Stress
• Is the unit of Strength of Materials

Unit of Stress are expressed in

• SI: Pascal (Pa or N/m2)

• English: psi (lb/in2)

• CGS: kg/cm2

Note:

101.325KPa = 14.7psi = 1.032kg/cm2

Types of Stress
Condition in which the stress is constant and uniform

• Axial Stress is the stress due to force acting at the centroid of resisting cross-sectional area
Tensile Stress

Compressive Stress

𝜎 is axial stress, MPa or psi

P is the applied force or load, N or lb

A is cross sectional area, mm2 or in2

Types of Stress
• Shearing Stress is the stress due to the shearing force applied to the resisting
area. A shearing force is the force applied parallel to the resisting area

where,

𝜏 is shearing stress, MPa or psi

P is the applied force or load, N or lb

𝐴 is cross sectional area, mm2 or in2

Types of Stress
• Bearing Stress is the stress cause by force which is perpendicular to the
resisting area. It is the contact pressure between separate bodies.

where,
𝜎 is bearing stress, MPa or psi

P is the applied force or load, N or lb

A is projected cross sectional area, mm2 or in2

Sample Problems

subjected to a force of 75KN. Find the thickness of the wall if the allowable

bar is 20,000N. Determine the diameter of the bolt required if the allowable
shearing and bearing stress on it is 70MPa and determine the thickness of the steel
bar.  Solution:

thick? The shear strength of the plate is 350 MN/m2
