Learning Objectives:
1. Analyzes an example of solo performance of vocal music from Mindanao
and describe how the musical elements are used;
2. Explains the distinguishing characteristics of representative vocal music
from Mindanao in relation to history and culture of the area;
3. evaluates music selections and music performances using rubrics on musical
elements and style
Discussion
Vocal Music of Muslim Mindanao
The solo performance of vocal music is characterized by the high tessitura or the rained
voice using a variety of sounds added as a vocal style of the Muslims.
5. Life cycle- events depicted through songs such as lullabies, songs related to birth,
courtship, wedding rites, and lamentation for the dead. Examples of these are:
ambay (Tiruray),
ngindung (Samal),
bombo-man (Maranao),
yug uyug (Mansaka),
sengal (Maguindanao),
emaga (Tlongot),
ta-miya (baloy),
yadadang (Bilaan),
adiyadi (Ata),
langan bata-bata (Tausug), and bua (Subanon).
6. Courtship and marriage ceremonial songs- love songs, like the Manobo courtship
songs sangong-sangong which are accompanied by saluray, kugot, or kitara.
7. Wedding feasts -where there is music making. Examples are sapo and ayyeng
(Kankanay), pamada, which is an introduction, and pamal-I kagum (Manobo).
8. Songs for the departed -songs performed for the dead. Examples of these are the
Manobo mourning song dalinday, tud-um, diaga, and funeral song tamandag.
9. Occupational songs- songs while farming, fishing, doing simple chores such as
indowan which is to call people to plant rice in Mandaya; sowa which is sung to
protect the fields from pests, and layad-layad which are harvest songs in
Manobo.
10. Songs for special rituals-performed for various purposes and important feasts.
Examples are the following:
khundit for curing the sick (Subanon),
angba (Ibaloy),
andaray and bansula for weddings (Bilaan),
bindayan for victory (lbaloy),
dumalongdong for the datu (Manobo), and
somodiot for seeking special favors (Subanon)
