Activity 12

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Photosynthesis is the most important chemical process on earth which involves the trapping
and storage of sugar molecules that is produced through carbon dioxide, sunlight and water present
in the atmosphere. Living organisms depend on photosynthesis as the source of energy (Bidlack J.E.
& Jansky S.H.).

DESIRED STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the exercise, the student should be able to:
1. Explain the process of photosynthesis.
2. Discuss the factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis.

MATERIALS
Clear glass (slim/small)
Hydrilla plant
Baking soda
Big jar or big glass (where the small glass will fit in)
Lamp

PROCEDURE

1 Remove the leaves of the hydrilla plant, cut the stem and crush the cut end of the stem.
2 In the small glass, place the cut stem, where the cut side should be in an upward
position.
3 Add water and a small amount of baking soda to the to the small glass.
4 Fill a big jar with tap water and place the small glass with hydrilla inside.
5 Place the jar in an area with sun light or place a lamp or flashlight beside it.
6 Observe small bubbles coming out of the stem for 10 minutes, if no bubbles cut and
crush the stem again.
7 Remove the jar from the light, then, observe the rate of bubbles without direct light.

TRANSPIRATION IN PLANTS

Transpiration is the process of water vapor loss from the internal leaf atmosphere. this often occurs
in the leaves and stems of plants. This also helps the plant to maintain moist, also enabling the process of
photosynthesis. The amount of transpiration depends on the plant’s physical and environmental properties as
well as the plant’s condition. Stomata plays an important role in transpiration since it closes when there is
excessive water loss to prevent wilting of plants. (Bidlack J.E.)

DESIRED STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the exercise, the student should be able to:
1 Explain the mechanism on how transpiration occurs in plants.
2 Identify the factors that affect transpiration in plants.

INSTRUCTIONS:
This activity may be performed by group or individually.
Submit documentation of the performed task, if it is performed as a group screenshot of the
video conference should be attached.

MATERIALS:
Mayana plant/any plant
String
Clear plastic

PROCEDURE:
1. Look for a mayana plant or any plant in your garden.
2. Place about 5 of more leaves inside the plastic and tie with a string
3. Document the plant with plastic, observe for 24 hours then take another documentation
after 24 hours. Observe what happens in the leaves.

POLLINATION

The transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma that allows fertilization is known
as pollination. This process happens when animals and insects such as birds, bees, butterflies and
wasps, carry pollen and transfers them either to the same flower which is referred as self-pollination
or to another flower called cross-pollination.

DESIRED STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the exercise, the student should be able to:
1 Discuss the process of pollination.
2 Explain the different types of pollination.

MATERIALS
Flowering plants in the garden

PROCEDURE
1 Observe plants that you can see in your area. Differentiate the flowers that can perform self-
pollination as compared with cross-pollination. Explain the characteristics of flowers that
are pollinated by animals and insects.
2 Collect flowers then observe the presence of pollen grains in the stigma.
