Components of Typical Linear Power supply

PART I Rectifiers

1. Half Wave Rectifier:

Procedure:
1. Draw the circuit diagram as shown above.
2. To provide Sine wave input, right click on the voltage source and click on advanced. Then provide
the details as shown below.

3. Click on the Run button to see the output.

4. To see output separately, right click on the graph and click on “Add Plot Plane”.
5. Click on each plane and then the corresponding parameter to be plotted in that area. Output will be
displayed as follows.
Result:
1. Amplitude of the input positive peak = 10V
2. Amplitude of the input negative peak = -10V
3. Amplitude of the output positive peak = 9.23V
4. Amplitude of the output negative peak = 0V
5. Do the same for Negative Rectifier
Result:
1. Amplitude of the input positive peak = 10V
2. Amplitude of the input negative peak = -10V
3. Amplitude of the output positive peak = 0V
4. Amplitude of the output negative peak = -9.23V

2. Full Wave Rectifier:

Procedure:
1. The component “transformer” is not available in LT Spice. So, it will be created by means of 3
inductors. The value of the inductor is obtained from the relation mentioned below.
𝐿𝑃, 𝑃𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝐶𝑜𝑖𝑙 𝐼𝑛𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑛12, 𝑃𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝐶𝑜𝑖𝑙 𝑇𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑠
=
𝐿𝑆, 𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝐶𝑜𝑖𝑙 𝐼𝑛𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑛22 , 𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝐶𝑜𝑖𝑙 𝑇𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑠
Here 𝑛1 = 10 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑛2 = 1. Assuming a standard value of 10𝜇𝐻 for 𝐿𝑃, value of 𝐿𝑆 is obtained as
1𝜇𝐻
2. The circuit diagram is drawn as follows
3. Voltage Source V1 should have the following specifications

4. We made transformer with inductor. But LTspice will not consider it as transformer. For LTspice
it is only two pair of inductors attached with two different circuit. To resolve it we need to add
mutual inductance between these two inductors. So, we will mention coupling coefficient (K) of
transformer in the schematic drawing of the circuit using spice directive in LTspice.
Mutual Inductance (M) ≤ √𝐿𝑃𝐿𝑆
Coupling Coefficient (K) = 𝑀
√𝐿𝑃𝐿𝑆
So, 0≤ K≤ 1.
If K = 0 ,transformer is loosely coupled, if K = 1, transformer is tightly coupled. So, we will use K =
1, as for tightly coupled transformer no leakage is there.

To specify the K value, click on the “.op” icon on the top right corner and provide the values
mentioned below

5. Click on run to get the results

6. The output will be obtained as follows
Result:
1. Amplitude of the Primary Voltage = 230V
2. Amplitude of the Secondary Voltage = 23.5V
3. Amplitude of the output positive peak = 22.19V
4. Amplitude of the output negative peak = 0V
5. Do the same by orienting the diode in the opposite direction and plot the results.
Result:
1. Amplitude of the Primary Voltage = 230V
2. Amplitude of the Secondary Voltage = 23.5V
3. Amplitude of the output positive peak = 0V
4. Amplitude of the output negative peak = -22.35V

3. Bridge Rectifier:
Procedure:
1. The circuit diagram is as shown above.
2. The parameters designed are same as that of full wave rectifier.
3. The output waveform will be as shown below.

Result:
1. Amplitude of the Primary Voltage = 230V
2. Amplitude of the Secondary Voltage = 22.8V
3. Amplitude of the output positive peak = 22V
4. Amplitude of the output negative peak =0V
