Dogs are known to be faithful and loyal companions, protective of their masters
and territory. There are several breeds, each possessing its own characteristics. The
basic characteristics of some different breeds are given below:
Akita:

The Japanese Akita is basically a type of spitz and was initially bred as a hunter of
deer and wild boar. It is easily trained and has an equable temperament. Does not
need much exercise and is a good swimmer.

German Shepherd:

Labrador Retriever:

The sweet-faced, lovable Labrador Retriever is America's most popular dog breed.
Labs are friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited companions who have more than
enough affection to go around for a family looking for a medium-to-large dog.
The sturdy, well-balanced Labrador Retriever can, depending on the sex, stand
from 21.5 to 24.5 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 55 to 80 pounds. The
dense, hard coat comes in yellow, black, and a luscious chocolate. The head is
wide, the eyes glimmer with kindliness, and the thick, tapering 'otter tail' seems to
be forever signaling the breed's innate eagerness.
Labs are famously friendly. They are companionable housemates who bond with
the whole family, and they socialize well with neighbor dogs and humans alike.
But don't mistake his easy going personality for low energy: The Lab is an
enthusiastic athlete that requires lots of exercise, like swimming and marathon
games of fetch, to keep physically and mentally fit.

Pug:

The Pug's comical face, with deep wrinkles around big, dark eyes and a flat round
face, can't help but make you smile. It is believed that the Pug's name comes from
the Latin word for "fist" because his face resembles a human fist. Pugs are clowns
at heart, but they carry themselves with dignity.
Pugs are playful dogs, ready and able for games, but they are also lovers, and must
be close to their humans. Pugs love to be the center of attention, and are heartsick
if ignored. Pugs are square and thickset, usually weighing no more than 20 pounds.
Their heads are large and round, with large, round eyes.
They have deep and distinct wrinkles on their faces. Legend has it that the Chinese,
who mastered the breeding of this dog, prized these wrinkles because they
resembled good luck symbols in their language. Especially prized were dogs with
wrinkles that seemed to form the letters for the word "prince" in Chinese.

Shih Tzu:

A small breed that is extremely intelligent, arrogant and loves luxury. It enjoys

The teeth meet in a level or under bite. The large, round eyes are dark in color, but
lighter on blue and liver dogs. The large, pendant, low-set ears hang down and are
covered in abundant hair. The back is level. The muscular legs are straight and
well-boned. The high-set tail is carried over the back and is covered in abundant
hair. Dewclaws are sometimes removed.
The double coat is dense and long, flowing down over the dog. The hair above the
eyes is often tied in a topknot. There is a profuse beard and mustache and the hair
on the muzzle is short. Coat comes in all colors.

Spitz:

Spitz is a type of domestic dog characterized by long, thick, and often white fur,
and pointed ears and muzzles. The tail often curls over the dog's back or droops.
Smaller breeds resemble foxes, while larger breeds resemble wolves.
This is a beautiful and intelligent small breed. It makes a good companion and does
not need a great deal of exercise. However, it is quite noisy and is suspicious of
strangers.

Boxer:

A faithful protector of the family and well-balanced guard dog, having both
courage and control. It somehow takes longer that most to grow up but is an

The coat is smooth and tight-fitting; colors are fawn, brindled, or white, with or
without white markings.

Siberian Husky:

The Siberian Husky combines power, speed, and endurance. They are moderately
compact, slightly longer than they are tall, and of definite Northern heritage. They
are quick and light on their feet, with a smooth and effortless stride exhibiting both
good reach and drive. They have a double coat of medium length, with a soft,
dense undercoat and straight, somewhat flat-lying outer coat. Their expression is
often keen but friendly, interested, and sometimes even mischievous.
