Caravans: over 80 people enjoyed a
barbecue on Sunday night 10 April
put on by Neil and Ros Haywood,
managers of Canowindra Caravan
Park. The park was at capacity with
28 caravans and 10 camping sites for
the first weekend of the balloon
events. Thanks to Belubula Butchers,
Windowrie and Rosnay wineries and
Annette Thomas for contributing to the
night. The visitors from places all the
way to Woop Woop and back, had
an excellent time are determined to
return.

Canowindra RSL Sub Branch are very
lucky this year to have Troy Grant, the
newly elected member for Dubbo as our
guest speaker for this years ANZAC Day
service Monday 25 April.
Memorial Park Gaskill Street, with break-
fast following at Canowindra Bowling
Club for everyone who attends the
service. Previous and current ADF person-
nel who would like to join the march, are
to meet at the Junction Hotel at 10.40am
with an expected start at 10.50am. The
service will then commence at
approximately 11am in Memorial Park.
Due to the fire damage to the Services
and Citizens club 2-Up will be held at the
Bowling club this year starting at 3pm. All
profits will be donated to Legacy.
The TAXI will be taking people who can
no longer walk the length of the street.

QUIET APPEAL
There is a family in Canowindra who are
currently going through a very difficult
ordeal following a incident two weeks
ago. Now, the parents are facing
unexpected expenses for travel,
accommodation and incidentals as a
consequence.

NEW AMBULANCE STATION OFFICER
In November last year Gary Murphy took
over the role vacated by the retirement of
Chris Weaver. After extended leave and
attending courses, Gary took over the
reins of Station Officer in January 2011.
Now Gary has settled in, he is determined
to get involved in our community and
promote the NSW Ambulance Service.
Gary advises to "not hold back" if you
think that there is an emergency situation,
call 000 Triple Zero and get help
immediately. Our ambulance station has
highly trained paramedics with the skills
and tools to save lives.
Married to Amanda and has two children
aged 10 months and 3 years. Gary has a
long history in medicine, previously being
a registered nurse in the Army Reserves,
and active in the Ambulance Service for
several years throughout the Central
West, coming to Canowindra from his last
role at Grenfell.
Gary was to have a photo included with
this weeks article, however work called
him out at the last minute, so you will
have to wait until the next Phoenix issue
on Wednesday 4 May to put a face to the
name.
Timely advice for this time of year, Gary
advises to steer clear of the “7 Fatal
Mistakes” this Easter:
1. Alcohol and drugs
2. Excessive speed
3. Fatigue
4. Poor vehicle maintenance
5. Inexperience
6. In-car distractions-stay off the phone!
7. Not driving to the conditions.
To avoid becoming a statistic:
• Plan your trip with rest stops, slow down
on unfamiliar roads and when weather
conditions change
• Allow extra distance between you and
the vehicle in front, especially when
driving behind heavy goods vehicles
• Watch out for other cars and drive with
care and caution, expect the unexpected.
• Use headlights at all times and ensure
your car is serviced and in good condition
• Watch out for pedestrians, cyclists and
motorcyclists.
In the event of a medical emergency dial
Triple Zero (000), ask for Ambulance and
remain on the line whilst details of the
emergency are obtained and an ambu-
lance is despatched.
Remember emergency services are there
to help you, however you need to avoid
putting yourself and family at risk. For
your and others' safety, be extra vigilant
these school holidays and Easter break as
there are more vehicles on the road.
To the editor...
Last week myself and my neighbours
were the victims of mindless vandalism.
This may or may not be because we
live in Ryall Street, close to another
family who have been the victims of
similar senseless attacks. Lets be
civilised please! This sort of discourag-
ing behaviour is not what we, or the
residents of our street need at the
moment.
Perhaps, instead, this could be a good
opportunity to show the truly
supportive nature of the community of
Canowindra.

To the editor...
Solar photovoltaic and hot water
panels on the many roofs around town
need "scrubbing" with a strong
detergent solution to remove a
developing opaque film of dust and a
"soot like" substance forming on them.
The strong high pressure weather
system which existed over NSW over
the last week or so with the Cumulus
cloud formation, seen in the afternoon,
with no wind, has contributed to this
deposit.
The smoke, containing carbon and
other particles from crop residue
burning close to town can been seen
caught in the up-draft of air, rising to
the base of these low level clouds.
Eventually these particles settle back to
earth on cars, the tops of rubbish bins
and roofs as the clouds dissipate later
in the day.
If such surfaces are wiped with a cloth
the black deposit is easily seen. Rain
water tanks are also affected. Hosing
in the early morning, while the panels
are still moist with dew, before the sun
light falls on them is only a stop gap
method of reducing the problem. They
need to be actually scrubbed.
It is difficult to know by how much the
efficiency of solar power generation
and hot water production from roof
top installations is reduced by the
accumulation of this film. However, this
would have to be further reduced even
more as the sun moves further North at
a lower elevation during the Autumn/
Winter/Spring seasons.

To the coward who insists on using our
Cudal Road mailbox as a toilet. If you
have an issue with private land
management do the proper thing and
take it up face to face with the land-
holder, or at the least leave a letter in
the mailbox with your concerns. Not
hiding under the cover of darkness on
your misguided missions.
Both incidents have been reported to
the police who will take action when
you are caught. You are a disgrace to
the district! By the way, check your
facts before dropping your daks!!!!

Cabonne Council will hold a special
ceremony in Canowindra to thank the
community for their contribution to the
newly-opened Canowindra Skate Park.
Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling said the
“thank you” function would be held at the
skate park to pay tribute to the
community, which raised $35,000 to help
make the $140,000 project a reality.
The skate park, funded largely through the
Federal Government’s Regional Local
Community Infrastructure Program, was
officially opened on Wednesday (13 April
2011) at Eugowra along with Cabonne’s
other major RLCIP project, the refurbish-
ment of the Eugowra Community Hall and
Child Care Centre.
“Although the skate park was officially
opened yesterday, I think it is appropriate
that we conduct another ceremony on the
site to show our appreciation to the
Canowindra people who have worked so
hard to help provide this important
facility,” Cr Dowling said.
“In particular, the Council would like to
recognise the efforts of the skate park
committee, the people who raised the
money in quite a short period of time and
the young people involved in the project.”
Cr Dowling said the Council would liaise
with the skate park committee to find a
suitable date for the “thank you”
ceremony.
The Canowindra Skate Park received
$75,500 in RLCIP funding, which was 50
per cent of Cabonne Council’s allocation
under the second round of this Federal
funding program.
In addition to the $35,000 raised by the
Canowindra community, Cabonne Council
provided $30,000.
The second stage of the project, which will
include landscaping and o ther
beautification work on the site, has been
included for consideration in Council’s
draft 2011/12 Management Plan.
The Canowindra skate park is the second
to be opened in Cabonne Shire in the past
12 months following the construction of
the Molong Skate Park, where the
community also played a major fund-
raising role, contributing $30,000 in cash
and a further $20,000 in voluntary labour.
“It’s terrific that these communities are
contributing so greatly to these projects
and taking ownership of them,” Cr
Dowling said.
“Other communities, including Manildra
and Mullion Creek, have approached
Council for skate parks and I would urge
them to follow the lead of Canowindra and
Molong.
“I know Manildra has already started its
fund-raising efforts and I imagine Mullion
Creek will be doing the same thing.”

Zucchini & Sweet Corn Soup
3 medium zucchinis chopped
4 cups vegie or chicken stock
3 cobs of corn
½ cup low-fat evaporated milk
Place zucchini, corn and stock
into a large pot and bring to the
boil. Simmer over gentle heat for
10 minutes or until zucchini is
tender. Remove from heat, cut
kernels from cobs of corn, puree
all ingredients in a blender until
smooth. Stir through milk.
Serves 6.

COLUMN Dubbo Electorate
It is with enormous pride that I prepare my
first column as your State Member for the
Dubbo electorate. It has been an exciting
three weeks since the election, filled with
enormous good will from so many in the
community and leaving me feeling very
humbled by the overwhelming show of
faith shown in me by the community to
represent you in the 55th Parliament of our
great state.
I am acutely aware that the people of the
Canowindra and district along with the
majority of NSW voted for real change to
the way the Government services our
communities. There is also a feeling of real
expectation as to how and when this real
change will be realised. I understand the
expectation is high and I ask the
community for understanding, that as we
prepare our timetable for delivery on these
expectations, that we are allowed the
appropriate time to establish the
mechanics in our Ministries, our Electoral
offices and our schedules to do just that
and provide a level of customer service
and satisfaction to the community not
previously experienced. Labor's scorched
earth policy of leaving nothing behind for
the new Government comes with the
consequence of stalling our ability to get
moving on real change. I commit to you
to being a transparent and open member
always available to you and the
community at large in acting on your
behalf and reporting back to you progress
on our policy agenda in achieving for you.
Parliament is expected to sit for the first
time on 3 May where I will be sworn in and
when we can get down to the business of
delivering for the Canowindra and district
communities.
