How to hang framed artworks at 60
inches on center using S-hooks

Process

At Herter Art Gallery, we hang artwork 60 inches on center. Meaning,

the center of your artwork should be 60 inches from the floor. (Some
galleries, like the video below, use 57 or 59 inches from center.)

1. Measure the height of your artwork, top edge to bottom edge

(including the frame, if framed).

2. Divide the height in half.

3. From this number, subtract the distance from the top of your
hardware to the top of the picture frame itself. (If your picture
frame has a wire, pull the wire taut when measuring.)

4. Add that number to 60 inches.

5. Measure this distance from the point on the floor where you want
to hang your work and mark the spot on the wall in pencil only.
This is where you should install the wall-mounting hardware to
hang your picture.

6. NOTE: The bottom of the S-hook goes on top of your center line
(not below).

Watch all the way through—they do not hang at 60 inches, but the
process is the same.

Use a level so the artwork will hang evenly on the wall.

Be sure to align the S-hook above the center line.

How to hang unframed artworks using
pushpins or thumbtacks

Process

The easiest way to hang an unframed work is to use push pins. The
gallery has some push pins, but we urge you to also bring your own.
NOTE: pushpins will leave holes in the corners of your work (upper
and bottom corners).

1. Measure the height of your artwork, bottom edge to top edge.

2. Divide the height in half and add this number to 60 inches.

Mark the wall in pencil. This will be the top of your work.

3. Once you’ve determined the top, measure the width of your

work from side to side and mark the wall on each side in pencil
(at the top).

4. Place a thumbtack at each side in the top right and top left corners.

5. You may also need to secure the bottom of the work as well.

4
Though they have a similar function, pushpins (above)
and thumbtacks (below) are slightly different.

5. Next, place your work on the wall. Use a magnet in each corner to

6. NOTE: You may need to use this same method (thumbtack/

magnet) to hold the bottom of the work in place, and you may also
need more than two magnets along the top or along the side.
