DEVELOPING WRITING SKILLS:

WRITING PERSONAL LETTERS / GIVING DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS

You have just been admitted to “Mircea cel Bătrân” Naval Academy. Write a letter to your best
friend. He/She intends to apply for admission at MBNA next year. In your letter, give him/her a
set of clear instructions on how to get admitted to the Naval Academy of Constanta.

INFORMAL LETTER LAYOUT

Salutation:
Dear John, /Dear friend,/Dear Sally,

NB! You are writing to your friend; therefore, keep your salutations casual, informal and warm!

Introduction:
It was wonderful to receive your letter. I am glad everyone in your family is doing great.
I am also excited that you have decided to join MMNA too! Let me tell you how to apply for
admission.

NB! The introductory paragraph connects your letter to previous exchanges, and explains the
main reason for writing. It shouldn’t exceed 2-3 lines.

Body:
Well, the first step is to….Next you should…./ Then you have to…..

NB! When you provide instructions, make sure you sequence them chronologically and signal
the transition from one phase to the next by using transition phrases such as: first, second, third,
finally, etc.

Concluding paragraph:
I hope you will find this useful. See you here at the Academy next year! Write soon!

NB! Keep you closing paragraph short (1-2 lines max.) Its purpose is to bring your letter to its
completion and open opportunities for further communication with your friend.

Closing/farewell line:
