WHY DO WE HAVE SLEEP PROBLEMS?

Sleep is an important factor for our health and social life. Sleep disorders negatively affect the daily
life of people. Insomnia or difficulty falling asleep (insomnia) is an important health problem seen at
all ages. Sleep disorders affect people's daily life negatively. Sleep should not be seen as an
interruption to daily life. There are three basic elements underlying insomnia: psychology, respiratory
problems, and physical problems.

The first problem is psychological problems. If there is an environment of tension and anxiety that
prevents you from sleeping healthy, and you have been sleeping badly for a few days, you may be
worried that your sleep will not be normal that night, and you may spend more effort to sleep, which
usually causes things to go worse. After a few nights, some of the things you do before you go to bed
will remind you of your sleep problems. Putting on your pajamas, turning off the lights, and getting
under a blanket can suddenly make you more awake. Meanwhile, interesting situations arise. Many
medical problems can cause insomnia. Among these, the most common psychiatric diseases we
encounter and some drugs used in the treatment of these disorders. If you have a psychiatric
problem, you will have a bad sleep. Treatment by identifying the underlying causes of the discomfort
can help improve your sleep.

The second and, in my opinion, the most important problem is the respiratory problem. The most
common picture we see in this regard is sleep-apnea syndrome (sleep apnea syndrome). The most
common symptom of this disease is snoring. Snoring is more common in overweight people. Alcohol
consumption and extreme tiredness can also cause snoring. During sleep, respiratory arrest can last
from ten seconds to a minute. Since brain functions may not be normal in people with sleep apnea,
problems in memory, learning and perception functions may occur. One of the most important
features of breathing pauses during sleep is the constant sleepiness during the day and sudden
drowsiness that can sometimes cause serious dangers. Such people can sometimes sleep at the
steering wheel even when the vehicle is stationary at a red light. They can even cause accidents.
Those with sleep apnea should be given a sleep test and the picture should be evaluated. In extreme
cases, various devices that prevent apnea can be used by keeping the airway open during sleep.

Another problem is physical problems. The most striking issue on this subject is restless leg
syndrome. While the person falls asleep or just at the beginning of sleep or in any part of the sleep,
he awakens from sleep with sudden arm and leg jumps. After struggling to sleep for a while, he
manages to enter the sleep phase. But then he wakes up again with violent arm and leg movements.
This cycle is repeated throughout the night. One cannot sleep peacefully and without a hole. He
wakes up in the morning not fully rested. The person wakes up with a violent leg movement. There
may even be injuries in the meantime. Fortunately, in today's medical technology, it is possible to
treat restless leg syndrome with medications. Decreases in blood iron levels can cause restless legs
syndrome. Therefore, in such disorders, the iron level in the body should be investigated.

In conclusion, psychological well-being and physiological well-being are undoubtedly the most
important factors for sleep patterns. The energy required to maintain daily life is collected during
sleep. The bedroom should have good sound and light insulation, and no electronic items should be
kept inside. In addition, keeping a bouquet of roses in a vase in the room both facilitates the
transition to sleep and helps memory. İbrahim Dellalbaşı
