Work Health and Safety (2)

All organisations in the New South Wales will have to follow the Work Health

and Safety Act 2011 and the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017. These legislations

outline the policies in terms of how employers are supposed to protect their workforce in

terms of health and safety along with what measures are to be taken by the employees to

support the employers.

As an organisation under the compliance of the legislation, it is required to:

 Periodically review and analyze the Work Health and Safety measures
 Ensure primary duty of care towards its staff members
 Obligated to consult the workers in terms of their health and safety
 Occurrences of all incidents should be documented
 Various forms of performance and safety audits are to be undertaken periodically
 Workers who have been injured during work are to be supported by the firm
 In addition to the above the NSW also has certain policies set in terms of workers
involved in Hazardous Manual tasks and these include:
 Proper training is to be provided to the individuals involved in such tasks
 Hazards and risks should be assessed and safety measures are to be thoroughly
implemented
 Proper safety gear and toolkit is to be provided to the workers

 Workers are obligated to ensure their health and safety and refrain from activities
which can put themselves and their colleagues at risk.

 Visitors in such areas are also obligated to ensure their safety and health in
compliance with the applicable policies (Safework)

In terms of work area regarding infection control, the NSW legislation dictates:

 Sufficient risk management methods are to be applied

 Proper PPE is to be issued to the workers

 The area of contamination is to sealed and isolated to prevent further contamination

 Every person involved must have received proper training and education in terms of
handling such affairs

 Hygiene practices are to be dutifully undertaken

 A thorough environmental cleaning is to be undertaken (Safework)

Furthermore, the NSW legislation for WSH also dictates policy requirements in relation

to emergency procedures. It states that a PCBU must have an emergency plan ready at all

times that is to be used under the circumstances that the WHS policy fails during the hour of

need. These include:

 Emergency procedures

 Evacuation methods

 Notifying emergency services

 Having a medical team on standby (Safework)

For instance, if all WSH measures fail and a fire breaks out at the workplace than

immediately the emergency services are to be contacted. The workforce is to be evacuated on

a priority basis and provided emergency treatment in accordance to their casualties. Further, a

separate team is to be assigned to minimize the hazard of the incident and avoid further risks.
