Introduction :-

Wind energy is a renewable energy resource. Due to increasing global warming and rapid
depletion of resources, the demand of developing and utilizing renewable sources of energy
has been rising. Wind mills are used to convert wind energy into useful mechanical energy
which can be stored and used for various electrical applications. This project is a combination
of two different systems. We are operating a manual hydraulic pump run by the wind mill
while simultaneously generating electrical power. Both the systems use the same wind mill.

It is freely available in nature with no adverse effects on the environment . It has low
maintenance cost. But it is intermediate in nature. The initial cost is high which makes it less
preferred as compared to other sources of energy. The huge losses occurring during
transmission reduces its efficiency.
Classification of wind turbines:-

 Vertical axis wind turbine/mill

 Horizontal axis wind turbine/mill
 Ducted mind turbine

Objectives :-

 To build up small scale wind turbine and to see feasibility of it.

 To reduce weight and cost.
 To operate a hydraulic pump with the help of wind mill.

Methodology :-

We first studied research papers from various sources to get a better understanding about the
project and to understand the approach needed for the project. After getting a better
understanding about the mechanisms involved, parameters to be considered, design
parameters of the blade, etc. We carried out a cost estimation of the various components
required and determined the approximate cost as well the various values of parameters to be
considered. After determining the various components required for the projects and their
dimensions, we carried out a trial for the design of the blades, the trail was a success. Then on
the basis of the findings in the trial, we designed the blades. After completion of the blade
designing, we determined the various mechanisms required and design of the structure, the
assembly of the mechanisms, etc. Then we gathered all the necessary parts required. After
that we assembled everything and tested the working of the assembly. After that we gave
finishing to the structure.
Principle :-

A) Power generation using wind energy: -

The mechanism uses a wind mill/turbine which converts the wind energy into rotary
mechanical energy. A gear box is used to increase the torque ratio of the rotor which
is then used to generate electricity by using a alternator/ dynamometer. The electrical
energy is stored in a battery which can be used later on. Depending upon type of
current generated, a conversion circuit is utilized according to the applications and
position of conversion circuit.
B) Wind mill operated hydraulic pump:-
The rotary motion of wind mill is converted into reciprocating motion by crank
mechanism. The reciprocating motion is used to operate the hydraulic pump. A
disengaging mechanism is used to connect and disconnect the transfer of motion
according to requirement.

Conclusion :-

Wind energy is a very suitable replacement for conventional energy sources which are
depleting rapidly. Although it was developed 1000 years ago it was not preferred due to its
low efficiency and high cost but recent development have reduced the cost considerably and
efficiency has improved over the years as well. We are going to combine wind mill operated
hydraulic pump system with power generation.
