COURSE: B Tech (Mechanical) Semester: 5th

SUBJECT: IC ENGINES AND GAS TURBINES (ME-309)

Q1

i. What are catalytic convertors? How are they helpful in reducing HC, CO and NOX
emissions?
ii. What do understand by the term EGR? Explain how EGR reduces NOx emission.

Q2

i. What do u mean by supercharging? What are its effects on engine performance?

ii. Explain with a neat sketch the principle of exhaust turbocharging of single cylinder
engine.

Q3

i. With the help of neat sketch explain the battery ignition system.
ii. With the help of neat sketch explain the magneto ignition system.

Q4. What are the functional requirements of an injection system? How the injection
system classified? Describe them briefly. Why the air injection system is not used
now a days?

Q5 In an air standard Otto cycle, the compression ratio is 7 and the compression begins at
35oC and 0.1 MPa. The maximum temperature of the cycle is 1100oC. Find (a) the
temperature and the pressure at various points in the cycle, (b) the heat supplied per
kg of air, (c) work done per kg of air, (d) the cycle efficiency and (e) the MEP of the
cycle.

Assume γ= 1.4, Cv=0.718 kJ/kgK and R= 0.287 kJ/kgK

Q6. A four stroke, four cylinder gasoline engines has a bore of 60mm and a stroke of
100mm.On test it develops a torque of 66.5 Nm when running at 3000 rpm. If the
clearance volume in each cylinder is 60 cc the relative efficiency with respect to relative
efficiency is 0.5 and the calorific value of the fuel is 42 MJ/kg, determine the fuel
consumption in kg/h and the brake mean effective pressure.

Q7 A gasoline engine working on 4 strokes develops a brake power of 20.9 kW. A morse
test was conducted on this engine and the brake power (kW) obtained when each
cylinder was made inoperative by short circuiting the spark plug are 14.9, 14.3, 14.8, and
14.5 respectively. The test was conducted at constant speed. Find Indicated power,
mechanical efficiency and bmep when all the cylinders are firing. The bore of the
engine is 75 mm and the stroke is 90 mm. The engine is running at 3000 rpm

Q7 In a Diesel cycle, the compression ratio is 15. Compression begins at 0.1 Mpa, 40oC.
The heat added is 1.675 MJ/kg. Find (a) the maximum temperature in the cycle, (b)
work done per kg of air (c) the cycle efficiency (d) the temperature at the end of the
isentropic expansion (e) the cut-off ratio and (f) the MEP of the cycle.
Assume γ= 1.4, Cv=0.718 kJ/kg K, Cp= 1.005 kJ/kg K and R= 0.287 kJ/kgK

Q8 A simple jet carburetor is required to supply 5 kg of air and 0.5 kg of fuel per minute.
The fuel specific gravity is 0.75. The air is initially at 1 bar and 300K. Calculate the
throat diameter of the chock for a flow velocity of 100m/s. Velocity coefficient is 0.8. If
the pressure drop across the fuel metering orifice is 0.80 of that of the chock, calculate
orifice diameter assuming, Cdf = 0.60 and γ= 1.4.
