Historic District Design Guidelines

The Design Guidelines provide greater certainty for property owners conducting work on
buildings within designated historic districts. They provide recommendations for treatments of
various building systems, such as windows and roofs, as well as information specific to
particular architectural styles. Work proposals that conform to the guidelines are generally
exempt for Historic Preservation Commission review and can be approved "over the counter" by
Community Development staff. Work that does not meet the Guidelines must be reviewed by the
Commission for appropriateness to the property and the district.

To use the Guidelines, you'll only need to look at two sections to find out if your specific
proposal may be exempt:

1. Look under the "Building Features" section to find the type of work you're proposing
(e.g. window replacement); and
2. Look under the "Architectural Style" section to find the style of your property and read
the portion relating to your work proposal.
